Yesterday, Sergio announced that Tia Mowry and Pooch Hall will not be returning to the sixth season of BET's The Game. Although mystery surrounds their departure, there are rumors that the actors left the show due to a salary dispute with the network.

Today, BET released the following official statement:

After five seasons on 'The Game,' Pooch Hall and Tia Mowry will not return as regular cast members on season six on BET Networks. As a result of Pooch's involvement on a new project, BET is in the process of reworking the casting and storyline of the show. That said, we hope both Pooch and Tia will make several guest appearances.

While we (will) miss the incredible adventures of Melanie and Derwin on 'The Game,' we appreciate all of their hard work, the laughs and wish them both the best on their future endeavors.

Robert Thompson, TV, radio and film professor at Syracuse University, told Detroit News that the Mara Brock Ali exec-produced hit show may fare better without Mowry and Hall.

Thompson says, "This is very unusual and hard to pull off, but sometimes these major cast changes can refresh a show; 'Law & Order' lasted as long as it did at least in part because of occasional cast overhauls," he added, "In the case of 'The Game,' these changes could allow the show to explore all kinds of new dramatic territory."

BET did confirm however, that cast members Wendy Raquel Robinson, Coby Bell, Hosea Chanchez and Brandy Norwood will return for The Game's 6th season.

Derwin and Melanie should have been given what they asked for! They made the show! They had real issues and did great acting. Bring them back!!!!

I Don't Know Why They'd Do Such A Thing, In My Opinion The Show Was Fine When It Had The Original Characters; Although They Shouldn't Have Never Put Brandy On The Show B/c She Doesn't Fit It Right, But The Show Went Downwards After D and M Became Rich And They Changed The Setting Of It All

The thing about it is, Melanie & Derwin aren't the problem: the horrible writing is. Eliminating Merwin from the show will not improve it if the quality of the writing doesn't get better.

What a way to payback the actors who are two of the primary reasons this show was brought back in the first place. Tia was instrumental in drumming up support for the show on Facebook & Twitter after the CW cancellation. What a shame.

I just don't think the game will ever be the same. Without Melanie and Derwin there is no game. Season six will flop. The only reason why people kept watching after season five was to see what happened with Melanie and Derwin not anybody else.

All the good black shows always fall. Its sad that two of the best cast members are leaving. I love this show and have been watching for years. I dont see it lasting when Pooch and Tia leave.

orbert thompson have you SEEN THE SHOW? Merwin was the heart of the show, it's total premise. I DONT have confidence in the Akil bc they have let the show deterioratie into the current bs that it is. s3 was the best. s4 was so ghetto and this season is a ridiculous mess. There is no way that a real life merwin would ask Tasha to be their surrogate. In real life they woulda hve just used an agency surrogate.
I will continue to watch s3 on vhs--yes vhs not dvr i am old school-- bc it is the best season.

  • ChgoSista | May 21, 2012 11:29 AM

I agree w/u, LilKunta; it WAS rather contrived for Melanie to have even asked Tasha to be their surrogate, especially so soon after their estranged relationship. "The Game" can just go. It's over.

Season 1 one was absolutely the best, Akimbo! Then it was a sitcom, and complemented its predecessor, "Girlfriends" well. Now it is a dramedy.

  • Miles Ellison | May 17, 2012 11:15 PMReply

Law and Order can get away with cast overhauls because that show attracts much better actors and has much better writers.

  • Akimbo | May 17, 2012 9:36 PMReply

Cool. So now that they've freed up some moolah, can they reach out to the writers from season 1 and beg them to come back?

  • Brandon | May 17, 2012 8:58 PMReply

How about bring Brittany Daniel back?

  • Ghost | May 17, 2012 8:44 PMReply

Law & Order? Last time I checked Law & Order was an Emmy winning show that bought in higher ratings than The Game could ever bring in. And most shows that do this do introduce new folks in the current season (Ally McBeal, CSI, Star Trek & Law & Order) or do a departing scene with the departing cast members. And who are they going to get? Most folks that they could bring in with some name power are already working on other shows.

Really? You say most other black actors of note are all currently working? News to me.
