Good news for you New Yorkers who never got to se the Tony Award-winning musical during its 14-month run on Broadway, before closing last year...

The producers of Fela! confirmed today that the show will return for a four-week engagement at the Al Hirschfeld Theater next month (part of the show’s ongoing world tour).

The biographical staging of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, which stars Tony nominee Sahr Ngaujah, under the direction of Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones, is scheduled to run from July 9 to August 4, before shipping off to Australia and Japan.

Fela! opened on Broadway in November 2009, received 11 Tony nominations that season, and won 3 - for choreography, costumes (for a musical) and sound design (for a musical).

Since closing, Fela! has been touring (and continues to tour) the world.

Pefect show for the summer. I saw it; loved it; recommend it; see it!

Great play! My father totally loved it and it was quite entertaining.

More plays should be filmed and distributed (and not of the chitlin' variety). I would loved to have caught Denzel in "Julius Caesar," if only at the nearest cineplex.

Exactly. I loved Spike's Passing Strange film, and can't believe i did not hear one word about this play when it was open here.

I'm glad it's coming back! I'm trying to find more info... is Saycon Sengbloh going to be in the revival?

  • Tambay | June 11, 2012 7:55 PM

No info yet. Likely not however, as she left the tour in January, after a short sting, and has since done Katori Hall's "Hurt Village," and is currently doing "Once On This Island" at Papermill, through the end of June. She seems to have moved on. But ya never know...
