Seith Mann's "MISS: Better Living Through Crime" Headed To Cannes To "Complete Financing"

MISS: Better Living Through Crime

Been a little while since we wrote anything about Seith Mann's adaptation of the graphic novel MISS: Better Living Through Crime, which Spike Lee is executive producing.

If I knew it was already in production, it would most certainly be on my short list of "2012 New Projects We Are Excited About;" alas, it's not... maybe 2013.

For those not familiar with Seith... he'ss received mucho ink (or is it pixels) on S&A, from his internationally acclaimed short film that launched his career, 5 Deep Breaths (watch it HERE), to the several critically-revered TV drama series he's since directed (including The Wire’s fourth season, episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Cold Case, EntourageFriday Night LightsHeroes, and many more shows), to the 2 feature projects he's currently working on - his feature debut titled Come Sunday (a story about a father, a son and the black Baptist church they make their battleground, which was most recently accepted into the IFP's 2011 Project Forum showcase last fall), and of course, his adaptation of MISS, which at one time Antoine Fuqua was attached to direct.

Seith's a busy dude, and we're all looking forward to finally seeing his feature work on the big screen.

Back to MISS... not that I have some earth-shattering news that'll spike your blood pressure, but it's news that's good to know, because it suggests that the project (which has been at some stage of development since we first announced it in the fall of 2009) is still very much alive and kicking.

With the 2012 Cannes Film Festival and Market on the horizon, I learned yesterday that the veteran producer behind the project, Pierre Spengler, will be heading to Cannes to complete financing on five projects being developed under his Clubdeal Ltd production label; and Seith Mann's Miss adaptation (which centers on the teaming up of a white femme fatale and a black hustler who become hitmen for the Mafia in 1920s USA) is listed as one of the 5.

I read the graphic novel, and posted a report on it over a year ago, on the old S&A site; I'll repost that actually for those who missed it.

But, as I said, it's good that the project is still very much in play; and the fact that the news is that producer Spengler is taking it to Cannes to "complete financing" suggests that it's already received SOME (or even most) of its financing, with the plan being to raise the rest of it at Cannes this month.

Let's hope that happens! This should be a hard-boiled noir thriller; fast-paced, violent, unapologetic.

Speaking with Seith about the project last year, he's certainly looking forward to the opportunity.

As for casting... well... we'll see; let them get the money first. Although, I won't be surprised if the project has already been packaged with its 2 young leads, as it's being shopped around for funds.
