An upcoming new music documentary from American Masters on Cab Calloway, titled Cab Calloway: Sketches, will premiere nationally on PBS, on Monday, February 27 at 10pm (as always, check local listings), in honor of Black History Month.

Although for those in the New York metro-area, you'll be able to see the film one day before everyone else, when it airs on Sunday, February 26 at 8 pm on THIRTEEN.

Directed by Emmy-winning filmmaker Gail Levin, the doc...

... explores Cab Calloway's musical beginnings and milestones in the context of the Harlem Renaissance and segregationist America using archival footage, animation based on caricatures by famed illustrator Steve Brodner and French cartoonist Cabu, and interviews. A singer, dancer, bandleader, and consummate showman, Cab led one of the most popular African American big bands during the jazz and swing eras of the 1930s-40s with Harlem's famous Cotton Club as his home stage. Best known for his signature song "Minnie the Moocher," his portrayal of Sportin' Life in the 1952 touring production of Porgy and Bess, and role in The Blues Brothers (1980), Cab influenced countless musicians, dancers and performers, including Michael and Janet Jackson, Matthew Rushing (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Uptown) and many of today's hip-hop artists.

Couldn't have said it all better myself :)
