As far as I'm concerned this is some major news for anyone who even claims to love black cinema. The news is that writer and director Bill Gunn's otherworldly and fascinating 1973 film Ganja & Hess is coming out on blu-ray DVD from Kino International on May 8th.

Announced earlier today... The opening night film of the 2012 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival on Thursday April 12th will be the World Premiere of Laurens Grant’s Jesse Owens, which was produced and written by 2012 Full Frame Tribute honoree Stanley Nelson.

As I said earlier today, there is nothing wrong with programs such as Channel 4's 2011 drama series Top Boy. I just think some black actors would appreciate greater opportunities to show their creative range, with more diverse subject matter. Last I wrote about this project a couple of weeks ago, Oprah Winfrey was said to be eyeing a role in director Lee Daniels' The Butler, to be produced by Laura Ziskin (Pretty Woman, As Good As It Gets, Spider-Man 1, 2 & 3) - the drama based on Eugene Allen, an African American who worked as a butler in the White House for over 34 years, serving 8 presidents from 1952 to 1986.
