Trailer for another thriller from South Africa; it seems like we've written about more than a couple in the last few months - maybe more than we've ever covered in the last 2 1/2 years of the site's existence. Obviously, South African thrillers existed before S&A was born, but we are only now starting to pay attention to them. I'd say probably after District 9, in 2009 (also the same year this site was created) South African cinema, especially what we'd call more *genre* fare, has been receiving international attention unlike it ever did before; South African filmmakers (mainly white South African filmmakers however) are making their splashy feature film debuts in South Africa, which are attracting Hollywood's interest, leading to the filmmakers helming gazillion dollar pictures with big name stars.

We debate it happening in cinema almost whenever it does - most recently and notably, the casting of Akira, and The Last Airbender; but you'll be *glad* to know that it also apparently happens in theater.

It hasn't arrived in the USA yet, but the film that's currently lighting France's box office on fire, and attracting heaps of praise and acclaim (co-star Omar Cy is being hailed by some in France as a blossoming black cinema icon who might be on track to win the French equivalent of the Oscar for Best Actor next February) has been seen and reviewed by some stateside outlets; also, one of our readers who lives in Europe recently saw the film, and she shared her thoughts with me via email, giving me the OK to post here.

Last week, after the Sundance festival committee announced its 2012 slate, I posted an entry requesting all those who submitted films to the festival, whose films were rejected, to email me and introduce themselves and their films, so that I can, at the very least, take a look at their work, and get to know the filmmakers. It's something I've done in previous years since this site's beginnings; and I'm glad to say that, unlike the last 2 years I made the request, this year, I received quite a lot of responses, thanks in part to the site's growth over the last 2 1/2 years, as well as raised awareness since joining the indieWIRE network earlier this year.
