This weekend's most impressive box office numbers came from Mission Impossible:Ghost Protocol which opened in only just over 400 IMAX theaters this weekend to a very solid $13 million. The film opens in regular theaters nationwide on Weds Dec. 21 where its sure to give other films opening on that day, including David Fincher's (totally unecessary remake of) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, a run for its money.

I know it's almost 2012, and I know I'm late in discovering FUTURESTATES and the interesting films they have to offer.  But I figure that if I haven't seen them, some of you S&A readers likely haven't seen them either.  And unless I'm mistaken, director Annie J. Howell's Tia & Marco, which premiered in 2010 and features Susan Kelechi Watson (Third Watch, Blackout, NCIS) and Enrique Ochoa as its leads, wasn't featured here on S&A.  If it was, forgive me, and just consider this a refresher post.

A few months ago, S&A's Cynthia Reid provided us with a look at director J.P. Chan's sci-fi short for FUTURESTATES, titled Digital Antiquities.  I enjoyed that film, so I started looking into Chan's past work.  In doing so, I found his 2010 gem-of-a-short, Empire Corner.  I don't believe the film was highlighted here on S&A; but if so, here it is again for those who missed it.  And if it wasn't, better late than never, right?

"I never set out to make a “surf movie.” My aim with Splinters, rather, is to introduce the viewer to an experiment unfolding in a Petri dish. How the surfboard catalyst will ultimately fuse two disparate worlds together is unknown. Will it be the golden goose that provides a “way out” for emerging surfing talent? Or could it give false hope and usher in the erasure of indigenous heritage while paving the way for commercial exploitation from the West?" -- Adam Pesce, director

In writing for S&A, I often find the "story" behind making films can be just as intriguing as the film itself.  That's the case with first-time director Alex Stapleton and her documentary Corman's World: Exploits Of A Hollywood Rebel, an homage of sorts to the king of low budget filmmaking Roger Corman.

I've missed past screenings of this flick here in NYC (there has been at least 1 screening I'm aware of), and I keep hoping it'll return so that I can finally see it! It looks like I'll get another chance...
