Ghanaian Drama "Sinking Sands" On DVD November 14th and Poster

From writer/director Leila Djansi, whose other project Ties That Bind just released an official trailer which we just posted, comes another Ghanaian drama Sinking Sands. We profiled the film back in April when it was screening at Cannes. Sands was the winner of several awards at this year's African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) including best actress and screenplay.

I admit we get so caught up with big box office weekend numbers that sometimes we overlook other successes that fly under the radar. They may not make $55 million in a weekend like Paranormal Activity 3 , but still they're impressive in their own way.

I'm a dope. I mean really. I could kick myself. How come I didn't come up with the idea for Paranormal Activity? I mean the premise is so simple. Set up a video camera, have absolutely nothing happen for 20 minutes and then have a lamp jump off the table by itself and everyone jumps out of their seats. The result... instant box office smash!

An African cinema history lesson happening at MoMA, here in NYC, today, and again on Wednesday... the kind you probably won't learn in film school; I didn't see or hear the name Jean Rouch (the French expatriate filmmaker) until I picked up a copy of Manthia Diawara's African Cinema: Politics and Culture (which I strongly recommend), and that wasn't so long ago.
