On September 29, Irish actress Ruth Negga (Breakfast on Pluto, Misfits), as reported on this site back in August, stars in the BBC Two biopic Shirley, in which she portrays iconic Diamonds Are Forever singer Dame Shirley Bassey. Negga is reported to have only had eight days to prepare for the challenging role.

It's a film that's received plenty of coverage here at S&A and now New Yorkers have a chance at taking a sneak peak at this award-winning production tonight in celebration of IFP's Independent Film Week. Rooftop Films and IFP have joined forces for this special event which takes place at 8pm/est in Central Park.

Actor turned director Kevin Hooks turns 53 today. As an actor, the Philadelphia native has appeared in Sounder, The White Shadow, He's The Mayor and Soul Food among others. His directing credits include St. Elsewhere, Vietnam War Story, 21 Jump Street, China Beach, Roots: The Gift, Doogie Howser M.D., Passenger 57, Cold Case, Soul Food, Lost, Alias, Lincoln Heights, Bones, Drop Dead Diva and Detroit 1-8-7.

It's on my to-see list when it screens at the New York Film Festival later this month (review will follow). Many more of you will get an opportunity to see it as well, as I was just informed that Janus Films will release Aki Kaurismäki's Le Havre, a film we've been following since its Cannes 2011 debut, theatrically in he US beginning on October 21st, in New York and Los Angeles. A national release will follow.
