It's titled Dog Jack, a film said to be inspired by Florence Biros's 1999 YA (Young adult) novel of the same name. Written and directed by Edward T. McDougal, and set during the Civil War, the film centers on "an escaped slave boy and his faithful dog who join the Union Army, never expecting to see his master again." But he does... on the battlefield.

The Mountaintop, Porgy & Bess, Stick Fly, A Streetcar Named Desire, and now add Bruce Norris' play titled, Clybourne Park, which examines race relations in the 1950s and in modern-day Chicago, to the list of new (or revival) plays/musicals coming to Broadway in the next 12 months that prominently feature black characters in leading roles.

As already noted, Goran Hugo Olsson’s acclaimed documentary, The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival (where I first saw it), and was later acquired for distribution by Sundance Selects, opens this Friday, September 9, but only in 2 theaters; and both of them are in New York... at least for now.
