This short shout comes from NYU alum, Ms J.J. Stone, featuring the talents of names you should be familiar with, given that we've written about them previously on this site - Adepero Oduye (Pariah), Anslem Richardson (Five Deep Breaths, The Locksmith); and cinematographer extraordinaire Bradford Young (Pariah, Restless City, Middle Of Nowhere).

As we've already covered, Spike Lee's She's Gotta Have It celebrates its 25th anniversary this year; another title also celebrating a pivotal release anniversary this year is Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust - her challenging seminal feature film, set in the very early 1900s, which takes a look at Gullah Geechee culture of the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia; a film that, in 2004, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

Somewhat of a diversion, but since there's been so much talk lately about George Lucas' Red Tails, in theaters early next year, it's somewhat fitting. Real life pilot for the Tuskegee Airmen, Daniel Keel is interviewed here by Larry Blucher. Blucher is a New Media Journalism classmate of mine; I liked his video and thought I'd share. Keel talks about the racism he faced while serving in World War II. You can find the full article in his website Questionable Things. :-)

A film that probably doesn't need much of an intro around here, given how much we've already written about it, will screen again in New York City this Thursday evening, the 25th of August; so all you New Yorkers who've missed the precious few past screenings of Victoria Mahoney's impressive and, dare I say, *controversial* (given some of the reactions to it I've read thus far), feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky, will have another opportunity to do so.

A worthwhile listen... Giancarlo Esposito chats with local TV anchors in Albuquerque, New Mexico, about the Albuquerque Film Festival, an initiative he heads called Film For Change, his role in Breaking Bad, his process/method in tackling roles, and more... including what he's currently working on... a film titled This Is Your Death, which he describes as "an unflinching look at reality TV"

El Sofa de La Habana (Havana's Sofa) is currently making its rounds at film festivals in Spain and France. The 52-minute documentary, written, directed and produced by Magda Wodecka and Grégory Szeps, was inspired by the filmmakers first visit to Cuba and their interaction with inhabitants along a stretch in its sea front, also known as "Havana's Sofa" during a period of political change in Cuba.
