Comic book enthusiasts will already be well aware of DC Comics' relaunch of its entire line; although the rest of you should know about this, since it's something we covered on this site in 1 or 2 previous posts, given our interests in the black characters that inhabit the DC Comics universe.

Well damn... Anchor Bay Films didn't waste anytime on this, did they? It was less than a week ago that I announced that they had acquired distribution rights to 13, a remake of the 2006 French film of the same name - a minimalist, black and white, atmospheric, tense thriller that I enjoyed, the feature film debut for Géla Babluani, the young French filmmaker of the original, who also wrote and directed this remake.

Score another one for the raptors (rappers turned actors)... this time it's the Dogg-Father himself, Snoop D-O-Double G-Y Dogg, who's now reportedly attached to star in a biopic on the life of Fillmore Slim (born Clarence Slim), the blues vocalist and guitarist, who was also a well-known pimp in San Francisco in the 60s and 70s, often referred to as "The West Coast Godfather of the Game" and "The Pope of Pimping."

Morris Chesnut's name is one I haven't heard much of later; scanning his IMDB resume... the last time he appeared on any screen was in ABC's re-imagining of the 1983 sci-fi miniseries V , which was cancelled in May this year. He was on it for the 2 seasons it aired.

Fresh off the success of maybe this summers strongest flick, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, British thespian David Oyelowo is in talks to join Tom Cruise in the thriller One Shot, which is based on the series of books by Lee Child, which "follows Jack Reacher, a former military policeman turned drifter..." investigating ... a case where a sniper is accused of murdering five people before being captured."

It’s a rare occurrence that a film is able to create a world that’s so vivid and raw that I’m sucked in and totally immersed in the world the characters live in, experiencing every moment as if I really am right there with them; So immersed that when the film ends, it’s only then that I realize how involved I was, and, given the roller-coaster of emotions the 90-minute Yelling To The Sky (Victoria Mahoney’s feature film directorial debut) is, from one extreme to another, the numbness I felt immediately after seeing the film makes total sense!

I challenge any film lover to watch Andrew Dosunmu's stylized feature-film debut, Restless City, and not be captivated by Bradford Young's hypnotic cinematography. Even the filmmaker himself has repeatedly tipped his hat to Young's efforts (he also shot Pariah by the way), helping (along with Dosunmu's laconic script) to turn what might otherwise have been a routine new-gen immigrant tale into much more compelling viewing.

2 films we've written about on the site, and which elicited healthy numbers of comments cumulatively from you folks will make their world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) today: Bill Duke's Dark Girls documentary, and Belgian immigrant drama/erotic-thriller The Invader, which stars Burkinabé actor Issaka Sawadogo. So I'm hoping to get some firsthand reactions to both films within the next 24 hours, which I'll share here.
