Relative newcomer Daniele Watts has joined the cast of Showtime’s Weeds for its final season, as Angela Mullen, described as quirky, alluring and mischievous, and love interest for Shane Botwin (Alexander Gould), whom he meets at the academy. Watt’s first episode aired July 8 with seven more to come.

This reminded me of Armond White's 2010 lament that film criticism is dead (thanks in part to Roger Ebert), and my questioning what film criticism is - whether it's essentially more of a seemingly joyless (to some), comprehensive, intellectual undertaking, or whether there is a happy middle - and as others have asked over the years, whether film criticism has any value.

Russell Costanzo's 'The Tested' Starring Aunjanue Ellis On DVD July 24

The Tested, based on the award-winning 2005 short film of the same name directed by Russell Costanzo and starring Aunjanue Ellis, Armando Riesco, Tobias Truvillion and Michael Morris Jr, will be available on DVD on July 24 this year. The film, which explores the complex relationship between mother and son grieving a family member, screened at the New Voices In Black Cinema Festival back in February.
