I'm expecting a full press release on this sooner than later, but in the meantime, lifted directly from the American Black Film Festival's website, here's the lineup for the festival's 2012 narrative and documentary feature film selections; you'll notice several familiar titles covered previously on S&A, like Better Mus' Come, Elza (photo above), The Last Fall, LUV, Ties That Bind, The Undershepherd, and Soul Food Junkies (which I noted is one of the 2012 titles we're excited about here on S&A).

Directed by Nancy Buirski, The Loving Story as the documentary is called, centers on a real-life story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple living in the state of Virginia where interracial coupling was illegal, and their struggles, including the US Supreme Court case named after them - Loving vs Virginia (1967), the landmark civil rights case in which the United States Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, declared Virginia's anti-miscegenation statute, unconstitutional, overturning existing laws and bringing an official end to all race-based restrictions on marriage in the United States.

Melvin Van Peebles will hit one of those milestone birthdays this year; the man will turn 80 years old on August 21st! I hope I'm lucky enough to live that long... and he's quite healthy too. I recall in recent years, seeing him running on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, putting guys 1/2 his age and younger to shame.
