I'll be seeing The Help this Thursday evening, and looking forward to finally taking a look at it, after over a year of discussing it, and reading your mostly derisive comments about it over that same period of time. Although I've read the book, and obviously familiar with the content, I really don't know what to expect here - whether it'll be a faithful adaptation, or something more transgressive. I'm leaning towards the former, but I'll find out for sure in a couple of days.

It may come as a surprise to some that there was a time in Zimbabwe's history when Robert Mugabe was considered quite the heroic figure in continental Africa, after rising to prominence in the 1960s as a Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) leader in guerrilla warfare against white-minority rule in then Rhodesia. For his actions, he spent more than a decade in prison in the 1960s and '70s.

Thanks to actress Yolonda Ross (above-right) for alerting us to these items. If you're not already familiar Ms Ross' work, you'll be soon enough. She's appeared both in film and TV, over the last decade, from a reoccurring role in HBO's acclaimed series Treme, to, most recently, Victoria Mahoney's impressive feature film debut Yelling To The Sky, which I've seen and later reviewed enthusiastically on this site.

One of the many fun things about watching old movies is catching a glimpse of a now famous actor in a role back when they were young and hungry. This weekend I happened to catch, on cable, Jean Claude Van Damme's first movie Bloodsport, which I hadn't seen in more than a decade, and had completely forgotten that a very young Forest Whitaker had a supporting part in the film.
