The Pan African Film Festival Announces Call For Submissions

I attended the festival for the very first time this year, and was overwhelmed by the number of films screened; truly one of the largest (if not the largest black film festivals in terms of volume alone). It was also where films like Think Like A Man, Toussaint L'Ouverture, and several other notable titles made their USA (and in some cases world) premieres.

Smart move by BET, and I applaud it. Even though we've championed Luther here on S&A, and I know a lot of you folks have already watched the series - both seasons - I'm also aware that there's still a large percentage of America (specifically black America) who have yet to watch a single episode, and probably don't even know that the series exists, which is unfortunate.

I recall the very first time I saw Melvin Van Peebles in person, at a Museum Of The Moving Image tribute event in early 2008 for the late St Clair Bourne, who'd recently passed (December 2007).

Not necessarily something to celebrate (given what happened that led to it), but I thought it was worth mentioning that, with the recent death of the great Ernest Borgnine on Sunday, Sidney Poitier became the oldest Best Actor Academy Award winner alive.
