I had no idea Octavia Spencer's life as an entertainer also extended to work behind the camera - specifically directing; or maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

Getting personal here since I've been involved with it from the very beginning and even despite the fact that it's early April, before you know it it will be that time of year again (where does the time go?) for The Black Harvest Film Festival. The festival takes place, as it always does, this summer at The Gene Siskel Film Center of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

While in retrospect, the films of the Blaxploitation era provided us with many cringe-worthy moments, they did contribute two things that can be viewed as positive. Black actors got work. And it was abundantly clear not only that Black was beautiful, but it was damn sexy to boot!

Can't say I've heard much buzz around this project, although it won't be out until July 6th, which seems like an odd date to release a drama like this. But maybe the thinking is that it could be a bit of counter programming, given what will be a deluge of mega-budgeted summer action flicks.

A quick recap... as reported about 2 months ago, Nigerian filmmaker Jeta Amata decided to rethink and reshoot his political corruption drama about the volatile oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, Black Gold, one of very few recent Hollywood/Nollywood-style collabs which stars Billy Zane (yup, that Billy Zane), Tom Sizemore, Vivica Fox, Sarah Wayne Callies (who's currently starring in AMC's hit new zombie series, The Walking Dead), Mbong Amata, Hakeem Kae Kazim (the Brit/Nigerian who has appeared in several British and American TV shows and films), and several others.

Though 20th Century Fox has not offically said anything, there are rumblings that they might postpone the release of their big summer comedy film Neighborhood Watch because of, what one would call, unfortunate timing; that being the Treyvon Martin shooting, which is still very much a very hot, intensely controversial issue.

This post comes a tad late, as the following film has been causing a stir since earlier this week. Earl's Post-Prison Playdate, directed by Rod Gailes (winner of the last Shadow & Act Filmmaker Challenge), is a 12-minute short that takes a provocative look at HIV/AIDS through the risky sexual behaviors of a newly released ex-con.
