It's been over a decade since Tony Briggs first conceived The Sapphires based on stories told by his mother, an original member of the soul-singing quartet of Aboriginal women that entertained Vietnam troops in the 1960s.

The Ernest Dickerson-directed pilot episode impressed them enough, because AMC eventually ordered a 10-episode season for the new crime drama series Low Winter Sun, which stars Mark Strong, and Lennie James, with Ruben Santiago Hudson and Erika Alexander in supporting roles.
