Brothers Hypnotic

The Maysles Cinema in NYC will present the exclusive U.S. theatrical premiere of Reuben Atlas' feature documentary Brothers Hypnotic, which follows 8 brothers who make up the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, taking on the music business while trying to adhere to their father’s vision of music as a path to consciousness-raising.

First-time director Atlas met the ensemble while they were playing on 42nd street in NYC, and followed them on tour, to meetings, in practice and at home in Chicago with their legendary musician father Phil Cohran - a loving family of one dad, three moms and 24 siblings.

The film follows a long list of "musical documentaries" followed on this blog in recent years, including Charles Bradley: Soul of America, Muscle ShoalsViva Cuba Libre: Rap Is War, 20 Feet To Stardom, and Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius of James Booker.

Maysles will open the film on March 24, for a week-long run through March 30, 2014, screening it at 7:30pm nightly, Monday through Sunday.

It's part of the quarterly series "Documentary in Bloom: New Films Presented by Livia Bloom."

Director Reuben Atlas and members of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble will participate in post-film Q&As following the shows on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29.

You can pre-order tickets here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/572437.

Brothers Hypnotic was a 2013 audience favorite at leading documentary festivals including SXSWHotDocsUrbanworld and Los Angeles Film Festivals. It will make its broadcast premiere on April 7, 2014 on the ITVS series Independent Lens.

On February 11, a sneak preview will be held at IFC Center as part of the "Stranger Than Fiction" series.
