ABC has cut its season 3 order of its hit Shonda Rhimes series Scandal from 22 episodes down to 18.

No official reason was given by the network, but the folks at TVLine suggest that it may be due to star Kerry Washington's pregnancy, which will likely interfere with the show's shooting schedule (she's due in the spring). Although, again, no official confirmation of that from ABC.

Obviously, if TVLine is correct, writing Olivia Pope out of those 4 cut episodes certainly would not have been an option.

ABC's other choice would've been to work Washington's pregnancy into Olivia Pope's storyline somehow - again, assuming that the reason for the order trim is due to her pregnancy.

So after next week's mid-season finale, there will be 8 episodes left, instead of 12, when the show returns on February 27.

How will Scandal Gladiators cope?

I think the pregnancy line may be total bullshit. I just finished Season 2 of 'Homeland' and after I did I watched the BluRay extras and star CLAIRE DANES was PREGNANT AS HELL filming the final episodes. I had NO IDEA until I saw the BluRay Extras. (Laugh at me now my friends who laugh because I still get discs in the mail from Netflix)

Now I don't know and shouldn't know Kerry's prenatal advice, but she could film a lot of stuff and film around it, but hey...

Two very different shows. Claire Danes could shoot every scene from the chest up and because of the content and style of the show, it wouldn't make much of a difference. With all the fancy clothes, love affairs, and strutting around required of Washington, Scandal couldn't get away with that.

This is why it's good to have a boss like Shonda Rhimes. Aaron Spelling was notorious for giving pregnant actresses a hard time.

This is normal actually. A lot of shows are being cut down to 18,16,13 episodes a season. It's cheaper for the networks to have less episodes, and people will still watch!

@JulieB: That is usually predetermined by the networks though. It's unusual for a show that has a 22 episode order to be cut down unless something unexpected happened. Like TV Line said, it's likely due to Kerry's pregnancy.
