I love this trio of Opening Night, Centerpiece and Closing Night films that the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) will screen, when the festival takes over Rave Cinemas Baldwin Hills 15 at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza in Los Angeles, starting TONIGHT, February 6-17, 2014.
A non-American Diaspora (specifically South African) film in Of Good Report, opening the festival; a Hollywood production in About Last Night, as the festival's centerpiece film, making its World Premiere; and an independent film in Blackbird, closing the festival.
Unfortunately, I've only seen one of them I've seen (Of Good Report) and highly recommend it for those attending the festival. But the other two certainly have my interest: About Last Night is a remake of the 1986 rom-com (itself an adaptation of a David Mamet play). Produced by super producer Will Packer, it stars Michael Ealy, Regina Hall, Kevin Hart, and Joy Bryant; Meanwhile Blackbird is the 5th feature film from Patrik-Ian Polk, which counts Isaiah Washington and Mo'Nique (making her first big screen appearance since Precious) as cast members.
Other high-profile entries include Half Of A Yellow Sun, 1982, Grisgris, and others.
PAFF is celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year, screening a total of 172 films - 37 documentaries, 23 short documentaries, 55 narrative features, and 57 narrative shorts, as well as 11 webseries in the new category of new media - all representing 46 countries.
The festival will hand out prizes for Best Documentary Feature, Best Documentary Short, Best Narrative Short, Best Narrative Feature, Best First Feature Film, and Best Web Series as well as audience favorite awards at the close of the festival.
