Well, tonight's the night, after countless teasers and posters released over the last month. And if you missed any of them, or just want something to get you excited for tonight's return of American Horror Story: Coven on FX, I've embedded most of them at the bottom of this post.Angela Bassett plays Marie Laveau, a practioner of Voodoo who lived in the 1800s, who was called "the Voodoo queen of New Orleans," and is indeed credited with being a unifying force in helping Voodoo penetrate New Orleans culture. We'll have to wait to find out just how involved Bassett's Laveau character will be in Coven's main plot, when the new season premieres tonight, October 9 at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.

References to Voodoo in popular culture are plenty, especially here in the West. From pin-filled/punctured dolls, to witch doctors, possession and animal sacrifice, these are likely some of what many would immediately think of, if asked to describe what Voodoo is. Some might also attribute it to a specific place - usually the countries of the Caribbean, like Haiti and Jamaica, or the southeastern United States, especially New Orleans. And while some of these beliefs are indeed tangentially related, others are stereotypes that have little or nothing to do with Voodoo itself, even though seemingly embraced by the zeitgeist, thanks in part to Hollywood schooling.Voodoo, as we know it, and that will be of some significance during the upcoming 3rd season of FX's American Horror Story (Coven), set in the aforementioned New Orleans, can trace its origins to a slavery-era coalescing of the assortment of beliefs and practices brought over from different parts of primarily Western Africa.

The opening credits for the previous 2 seasons of of FX's American Horror Story were fun. A sufficiently creepy collage of both still and moving images, with an eerie musical overlay and sound effects. Via Twitter earlier today, show co-creator Ryan Murphy shared what will be the opening credits for the series' upcoming third season, adding that the sequence includes clues to how the new season's narrative will progress. See if you can spot them.Although names noticeably absent from the opening credit sequence are Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe. I expected to, at least, see Bassett's name, given that she's one of the leads this season. I suppose she'll likely receive something like a "special guest star" credit.Expectations are even higher for American Horror Story: Coven, which will explore "themes of race and oppression and family — especially mothers and daughters — along with laughs and scares and a few tears," as executive producer Tim Minear puts it.Here's a breakdown if you missed it previously:

I've been catching up on past seasons of FX's series American Horror Story, and I must say, I'm actually enjoying it. I'm at the end of season 1, and while it starts to get a bit too manic for me during the last 2 or 3 episodes, as so much seems to happen in those final episodes, I can say that I dug season 1, and will now begin season 2. Although I'll wait about a week before doing that, so I don't overload myself with the series and become too full.Expectations are even higher for the upcoming new season 3 of American Horror Story (which will be titled American Horror Story: Coven) thanks in part to the additions of Angela Bassett and Gabourey Sidibe to the cast. Also veteran stage star Patti LuPone has hopped along for the ride from series creator Shawn Ryan.

I've learned that director Gregg Araki (Kaboom, Mysterious Skin) is currently in post-production on his film adaptation of Laura Kasischke's novel White Bird In A Blizzard, a film that Gabourey Sidibe and Angela Bassett are cast members of - interestingly, because both actresses also will be appearing together in the upcoming season of American Horror Story.

Do you remember the feeling of watching a perfectly sculpted Angela Bassett breathe pain and life into the microphone as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do With It?" In the film, Turner's "Proud Mary" becomes a salvation song, the performance a cathartic, explosive release for Turner during years of abuse and rising stardom. Its dramatic mix of golden shingled-dresses, penetrating vocals and embodied performances delivers a deeper understanding of the person it attempts to portray.
