While we wait for the big screen adaptation, BBC America is getting us ready for what they promise should be an even darker, more intense season 3 of the acclaimed fan favorite, Luther, by releasing a brand-spanking new trailer, revealing more footage, and giving USA audiences a better idea of what this season's story strands will comprise of.

Well, there's been talk of a Luther movie for about 2 years now, after the end of the first season (the third season already aired in the UK, and will debut in the USA next week - 4 nights in a row, September 3-6, at 10pm ET/PT each night). But it looks like it's closer to becoming a reality, after lots of speculation - most recently, in June, Idris Elba said:"If we do decide to make this film, the spine of the film will probably come from The Calling - which is the book - and that starts at the beginning of who Luther is and where he's come from... It's a goal for Neil and I, for sure - we've talked about it at length." I guess that "if" is no longer necessary, because series creator Neil Cross revealed at the Edinburgh International TV Festival last week (according to Screen Daily) that a script has been written, and they are planning for a 2014 production start date.As for content, as Idris notes in his quote above, this will be more of an *origins* film, taking audiences all the way back to Luthers early days, which as you can guess, means, no Alice (Ruth Wilson); although it also means Luther's ex-wife (SPOILERS if you aren't caught up on the series to season 2) Zoe (Indira Varma), who was killed at the end of the first season, will be alive again, because, as Cross shared at the Edinburgh festival:"It will follow his career in the earlier days, when he is still married to Zoe, and the final scene in the film is the first of the initial TV series." The film will see the return of Indira Varma as Zoe, as well as Luther’s crime-solving cohorts Justin Ripley and Ian Reed, played by Warren Brown and Steven Mackintosh, respectively."The ultimate 'Luther' story will unfold on the big screen," Idris said in 2011.

I actually am a little surprised by this. Not that I expected the film to be violence-filled, with lots of foul language, sex and nudity to warrant an R-rating, but Nelson Mandela, the South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, lived far from what you'd call a PG-13 life, from his early days involved in anti-colonial politics, joining the ANC and becoming a founding member of its Youth League, to his life imprisonment sentence in 1964, narrowly escaping the death penalty, but spending some 27 years in confinement, and later, as the first non-white head of state in South African history, as well as the first to take office following the dismantling of apartheid and the introduction of multiracial democracy. He was also the oldest head of state in South Africa's history, taking office at the age of 75.
