After a recent recurring role on True Blood as Lafayette’s (Nelsan Ellis') mom Ruby JeanAlfre Woodard will guest star on Private Practice during the fall season, playing Taye Diggs’ mother, in an episode that will air in November.

No word on whether it'll be a recurring role as well.

Before that, Woodard will first be seen playing Ouiser in Lifetime’s all-black remake of Steel Magnolias, which airs on October 7.

Last season on Private Practice, Taye Diggs' character's sister Corinne (played by Anika Noni Rose) made an appearance.

Private Practice returns this fall on September 25

What would satisfy me if we didn't have a black guy that hates black women. Not watching this sambo.

@ Akimbo: How about Phil Morris?"phil+morris"&hl

Shonda is just all about moms. On Grey's, I think we've met almost all the intern/resident's mothers, but only Callie and Meredith's fathers (Hector Elizondo & 'Cyrus' from Scandal, respectively). Yes, she's thrown Alfre, Debbie, & Loretta some recurring money, but James Pickens has been collecting that fat series regular check for the last bazillion years. Would be interested to see who they'd get to play Jesse Tyler Williams' father, though. They've established that his paternal grandfather is white, but making the very light Debbie Allen his mom has left the door open for either a white or biracial man to play the part. Off the top of my head, I can't even come up with any biracial/light-skinned contemporaries of Debbie Allen. I know there are a couple out there, but I can't get too-old James Earl Jones out of my head. And Harry Lennix too young, Phillip Michael Thomas too yuck/irrelevant...

Diggs is 41. Woodard is 59, closing in on 60. So, the answer is yes. My question though is can any of the black guys on Shonda's show actually have a dad for once? It is nice Shonda is giving older black actresses some extra work (Diahann Carroll, Debbie Allen and now Alfre), but it would have been satisfying if at least one of those characters had a father who showed up on the screen.
