As I said in an earlier post today, regarding Expendables 2 director Simon West's interest in an all-female spin-off of the The Expendables franchise... while it all probably was just wishful thinking on his part, don't be too surprised if we eventually post an announcement on the development of an Expenda-Belles movie, as Simon West put it.

Skip ahead about 8 hours to this post, announcing the greenlight of an all-female Expendables movie; although it doesn't look like Simon West will have anything to do with this one.

Instead, executive producer Adi Shankar (the man behind movies like The Grey, Killing Them Softly - the upcoming Brad Pitt project- the Judge Dredd reboot, and Allen Hughes' Broken City) has hired newcomer Dutch Southern (yes, that's really the writer's name) to pen a screenplay for an all-female take on the Expendables ranchise.

Shankar will produce the film of course, via his 1984 Private Defense Contractors production company (interesting name for a production company), which will also fully finance the film.

What about casting? The production company is reportedly already "in talks" with several well-known actresses who aren't strangers to action films.

Like who, I wonder?

Names that come to mind would be Gina Carano, Milla Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, Rhona Mitra, Talisa Soto, Lucy Lawless, Jennifer Garner, and Joanie Laurer.

I know this woman may be a bit over-exposed but I think she would be a good addition to the list. How about Queen Latifah? Oh, I just thought of Eve? Or Viola Davis? Maybe even Whoopi Goldberg?

  • Deborah | September 10, 2012 8:44 PMReply

    Aaahhh man,
Many of the women I had thought of were already mentioned! But 2 names I haven't seen are Aisha Tyler ( 24 / XIII: The Series), Gina Torres (Firefly). And how about Noomi Rapace, Gina Carino (Haywire), Gina Gershon (Bound), Linda Fiorentino (The Last Seduction). Yeah, "Haywire" wasn't in the theatres very long , it's on Netflix. Carino...Is...Not...Joke! It's been a few years for Gershon and Fiorentino, but these women are still Badass!

  • olu | August 28, 2012 6:37 PMReply

    1) Cynthia Rothrock - maybe only 1 of the recurring names can go toe to.toe with her in a fight.
    2)Michelle Yeoh- Contemporary to Cynthia
    3)Sigorney Weaver
    4)Linda Hamilton
    5)Michelle Rodriguez
    6)Milla Jovovich
    7)Zhang Yi
8)Geena Davies (she rocked in The Long Kiss Goodnight)
    9)Pam Grier
    10) Zoe Saldana

  • Lawrence | August 28, 2012 5:29 PMReply

Without a doubt Grace Jones and Sigourney Weaver. Maybe Jessica Fox (Kill Bill). Pam Grier is obvious. I'd include Regina King if she were older (loved her in Southland.)

  • nathalia coimbra | August 28, 2012 5:01 PMReply

milla jovouvich is sooo getting a role in this movie

  • Kwesi Johnson | August 28, 2012 1:10 PMReply

I hope they get Cynthia Rothrock

  • Ma'am | August 25, 2012 6:34 PMReply

I think LisaRaye McCoy would do a good job. This is the type of role she has been waiting for.

  • angela | September 2, 2012 9:14 PM

What the heck? What action has LisaRaye done? LOL

  • ss | August 31, 2012 8:20 PM

not really. she'd worry about her hair and nails. plus she's not that strong of an actress.

  • what | August 27, 2012 2:36 AM

    lmao. she can't act

  • Formerly From Tokyo | August 20, 2012 2:11 AMReply

I wouldn't be interested in watching waif-fu, so they would have to get actresses that really look like they could legitimately mess someone up. My suspension of disbelief is not that strong. That said, however, I'd like to see Pam Grier back in action.

  • alan | August 19, 2012 6:31 PMReply

    -Peta Wilson (!!!)
    -Michelle Rodriguez
    -Lucy Lawless (!)
    -Sigourney Weaver
    -Linda Hamilton
    -Devon Aoki

  • nathalia coimbra | August 28, 2012 5:04 PM

damm michelle rodrigues and milla jovouvich are gonna rock on this movie,

  • Ms. Mooks! | August 19, 2012 5:38 PMReply

Now we can't just name ANY actress who has been in an action movie. Clearly these women need to have been in at least a few franchise films either as the lead or supporting. (The Expendables had bankable action stars minus Terry Crews and a few others) So...who's the bankable female actioner besides Angelina Jolie ,Kate Beckinsale and Milla Jovovich? (Without a doubt in my mind Pam Grier is a sure thing.)

  • name dropper | August 27, 2012 4:43 PM

    sigourney weaver is a no-brainer

maybe demi moore (think g.i. jane)?

    lucy liu is a must.

a lot of other recent choices might include the actresses who played black widow and catwoman, respectively from avengers and dark knight rises.

  • MrsSlocombe | August 19, 2012 4:39 PMReply

    Cynthia Rothrock Seconded!

  • GypsyGirl | August 20, 2012 1:05 AM

I agree wholeheartedly with Cynthia Rothrock.

  • Heck yes | August 19, 2012 3:23 PMReply

Candidates: Gina Carano, Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Lucy Lui, Angela Bassett, Gina Torres, Paula Patton, Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain and Scarlett Johansson. Let's do this ladies!

  • Justine | August 19, 2012 12:08 PMReply

Definitely Milla Jovovich since she holds the record of longest running "female action star" franchise. But I would add Angelina Jolie, Kate Beckinsale, Uma Thurman and Scarlett Johansson.

  • cuba | August 18, 2012 7:01 PMReply

    PETA WILSON of course :)

  • Albert Pride | August 18, 2012 5:49 PMReply

Pam Grier, Saana Latham, Uma Thurman, Halle Berry, Gina Torres, Angela Bassett, & Lucy Alexis Liu...Now there's a "Magnificent 7"...

  • eeee | August 18, 2012 6:25 PM

    boo.

  • dora w | August 18, 2012 3:16 PMReply

I think Rosario Dawson would be a great cast along with Pam Grier, Michelle Rodriguez, Michelle Yeoh, and Kill Bills great Uma Thurman! Tell me who wouldnt pay to see these women in action!!??

  • troy | August 18, 2012 3:01 PMReply

Will the women be on steroids too? Kate Beckinsale added enough for actresses Chris Cyborg who ended Gina Carano's MMA career and some women Judo olympians. Trex from USA women's boxing. The men were the real deal the women have to be more than actresses

  • chrisdvanne | August 18, 2012 11:14 AMReply

    Definitively Summer Glau!
As Joss Whedon said at this year San Diego Comic Con : "The amount of vulnerability and strength she can convey is beyond magnetic".

  • Kevin | August 18, 2012 9:46 AMReply

Tina Turner could get her Mad Max on again.

  • Kevin | August 18, 2012 8:36 AMReply

Michelle Yeoh! And for the obscure cheese factor, Cynthia Rothrock! (look her up, people)

  • CountEm_Grind_Em | August 23, 2012 9:39 AM

Michelle Yeoh?! Where can I pre-purchase tickets?

  • Juhan | August 18, 2012 6:53 AMReply

    get Grace Jones.

  • Lawrence | August 28, 2012 5:25 PM

    Definitely Grace Jones ---

  • Luce | August 18, 2012 10:08 AM

She actually could be Trench. I second that !

  • ALM | August 18, 2012 12:40 AMReply

This could be really good if it's written well. It would also be nice if the studios did not pull the gender stereotype card and attempt to act as if the cast can't/won't get along because it is a cast full of women.

  • Justin | August 17, 2012 11:42 PMReply

I'd have to add Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, and Angelina Jolie to the list.

  • Nadine | August 17, 2012 10:14 PMReply

Kerry Washington - Mr. & Mrs. Smith... who would bring her SCANDAL audience with her.

Actresses I'd love to see in it:

    Sigourney Weaver
    Linda Hamilton
    Gina Carano
    Pam Grier
    Salma Hayek
    Zoe Saldana
    Bai Ling
    Lucy Liu
    Angelina Jolie

  • D.C. Kirkwood | August 17, 2012 9:06 PM

Let's not forget Angela Bassett she did her thing in "Strange Days", and Sanaa Lathan in Aliens vs Predator they both deserve a nod. Vivica Foxx did most of her stunts in Kill Bill, she can handle herself in the Expendables too.

  • Akimbo | August 17, 2012 7:38 PMReply

Cart before horse. We pretty much covered the casting possibilities, now comes the year(s) of waiting for something, if anything, to happen.
