American Promise
Impact Partners (The CoveHow to Survive a Plague, Hell and Back Again, Detropia, Pandora’s Promise) will release Joe Brewster's and Michèle Stephenson's acclaimed feature documentary, American Promise, in theaters, starting October 18.

But before that, those in New York City will be able to see the film when it premieres at the prestigious New York Film Festival, its 51st annual edition. It will screen amongst 36 exciting titles selected for the festival's main slate, when it opens its doors on September 27, running through October 13.

This personal film, a 13-year journey, follows the directors’ son (Idris) and his best friend (seun), from their first day of kindergarten through high school graduation, and how their lives diverge, as they navigate an elite, performance-driven, ivy league New York City prep school in a world still largely segregated by race, class and culture.

The completed film, which made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January (and continues to travel the film festival circuit, winning accolades along the way) is scheduled to air on PBS' prestigious POV program eventually, so it should be accessible to most at that time.

As I do every year, I'll be covering the NYFF this year, although, aside from American Promise, there's not much else scheduled to screen that meets this site's coverage criteria. I'm not exactly high on seeing the Tom Hanks Somali Pirate drama Captain Phillips, for reasons I've previously expressed. But, chances are, I probably will, if only to see if it meets or exceeds my expectations.
