Talented stage and screen actress Anika Noni Rose will make a guest appearance on the season premiere of Law & Order SVU this Wednesday (Sept 21st) at 10pm/est on NBC.

Law & Order often mimics stories from real news headlines and this episode, titled "Scorched Earth," will be no different. Rose will play a hotel maid accusing a powerful Italian diplomat, being played by Franco Nero, of rape.

Here's a more detailed description:

The detectives of the Special Victims Unit are called to the scene when a hotel maid (Rose) reports being assaulted by Italian diplomat Robert Distasio (Nero). Bureau Chief Mike Cutter (Linus Roache) and ADA Alex Cabot (Stephanie March) prosecute the high-profile case, which quickly grows more complicated as the maid’s credibility is publicly questioned. Detective Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) joins the Manhattan SVU from Atlanta, while Benson (Hargitay) struggles to cope with the fall-out from the shooting in the precinct.

This episode will also debut two new characters played by Danny Pino and Kelli Giddish. Pino replaces Elliot Stabler (Christoper Meloni) as Olivia's new partner. Below is a clip introducing the new characters.

I'm always torn about SVU--loooove the show (and Olivia and Elliott!) but got tired of all the White female victims. This should be a very interesting episode, and agreed that Anika should be getting bigger roles-the lady acts, sings and dances very well. But no telling what plot twists are in store and her character might be pivotal.

Can never get enough of Anika.

Hope Hollywood realize the talent here.

I'm not feeling that description either...they played her. Although since the source isn't L&O, I wonder who ultimately is at fault for it. I just like shooting my arrows at the right cowboy, if you know what I mean;-)

Her playing a maid here doesn't raise any red flags for me because it's ripped from the headlines. If done right, it'll be a poignant case of he said -she said, abuse of power, privilege, with plenty for her to do dramatically. It could be one of the more memorable episodes. A little bit of exposure for's all good.

With talent like hers, something big is sure to come.

I meant Broadway, Oscar, and talent. "SVU" is a tired franchise, in my opinion. But like I said, a role is a role, and I'll watch the episode just because she's in it.

And don't think the "hotel maid" aspect isn't influencing my opinion, either. Read that episode description again; they didn't even name her character, but Nero's character is written as "Italian diplomat Robert Distasio". L&O:SVU has even managed to belittle Ms. Rose's character in description alone.

Again, there's nothing wrong with her taking the role. I just wish we could see her on screen more often, in more substantial roles.

"Because by now, I would have thought Ms. Rose would be past having to take these roles."

Just curious, what did you mean specifically by that? Is it bc she's a Broadway actress, co-starred in an Oscar-winning film, or her talent?

Part of me wants to scream "Why!!!" Because by now, I would have thought Ms. Rose would be past having to take these roles. But a paying role is not a role one should easily pass up, so I am not mad at that. I don't usually watch L&O:SVU, but I'll tune in to see Ms. Rose do her thing.

Interesting that Franco Nero is playing the rapist. I wonder if he's really getting cast as a cameo in Django Unchained as reports allege.

    Ripped from the headlines, indeed.

I'll be playing Anika's friend/co-worker, Adisa, that later betrays her in this episode.

Hmm. The storyline reminds of something that is currently in the news. *coughs* Dominic Strass-Kahn case.
