Announcing Jai Tiggett As Associate Editor of Shadow And Act

FYI

In an effort to help the site evolve beyond its current incarnation, and become what I always envisioned it to be from the day it was created, I'll be beefing up the S&A staff with people who I believe are well-positioned to assist in making that transition.

Contrary to what it might seem, there isn't some well-staffed operation behind the running of this site, unfortunately. It's really be me wearing several different hats over the years (something that's taken its toll - at times, enough for me to consider shutting down the site and moving on to something else), as well as Sergio (the only other person who's been here since the beginning), and others who've come along as the site has grown (like Vanessa and Emmanuel, to start), chipping in as they can. It's been mostly a labor love. No one's been getting rich doing this, although I'm certainly very grateful that Indiewire asked us to join the network in 2011, which translated to advertising income that wasn't there before, during the first 2 years of this site's existence.

And that income has allowed me to run this site over the last 3 years (the site was launched in April 2009), which has also meant that I've been able to pay writers who've come on board to contribute in recent years - like Cybel's very popular monthly cinematography tool-kit pieces, as well as Tanya's always contentious op-eds. Also the many reviews, interviews and more by Jai, Zeba, Nijla, Masha, and others who've contributed to this site in recent ears.

And the time has come to really start to move the site in the direction I originally intended for it (a global diaspora cinema portal, with rich original content that informs, educates, challenges and entertains), now that I have amassed the funds to do so - at least, enough of a budget to begin the transition (hence my announcement on the S&A Facebook and Twitter pages a week ago that I was looking for writers all over the world).

And that starts with bringing the right people into this growing family who also share a similar vision.

So, with that, I'm pleased to announce that Jai Tiggett has assumed the title of Associate Editor of Shadow And Act.

A writer and filmmaker whose work has screened internationally, and been featured on sites like Colorlines, Takepart, Clutch, and more, Jai's been contributing to this site since 2011. Her writing has appeared in print and online.

In her capacity as Associate Editor, in addition to writing and editing for the site, Jai will help manage S&A initiatives on the west coast. So please join me in congratulating her!

Over the next several weeks, expect similar announcements of not only new promotions, but also new blog series (we've already announced 2 thus far).

Thank you all for your support over the years. Now a new, more structured S&A chapter begins!

Cheers!
