Another black actor who continues to defy the "struggling black actor" industry rule, as demand hasn't failed him, is attached to co-star with Christopher Plummer in a drama/romance/thriller titled A Girl And A Gun, from director Filip Jan Rymsza.
The Royal Road Entertainment, and Swordspoint Productions project follows a wayward errand boy who longs to move up the Hollywood ranks, but has attained little more than heartache and debt, and the beautiful Anna, an aspiring actress fresh off the bus from Kansas.
Here's an official synopsis:
A piece of Los Angeles pulp fiction, centering on Ian, an "errand boy" for a powerful businessman. Having saved the beautiful Anna from a gang of adolescent boys, Ian learns that she's an aspiring actress fresh off the bus from Kansas, who was just robbed of her life's savings. Hoping to seduce her and recover the money for himself, he introduces himself as a Hollywood producer, but he doesn't account for her charms... or her past. And then there's the gun...
I assume Anthony Mackie will play Ian and Plummer is the powerful businessman. According the production sheet I received, Anna has yet to be cast.
The description reminds me of the Columbus Short film, The Girl Is In Trouble. Not entirely the same premise, but some similar circumstances.
It looks like the project has been in development for a year (or maybe even more), with Mackie and Plummer attached to star for maybe just as long.
A summer production start date is now eyed, with the project listed as being in pre-production currently.
Doing some further digging, I found a camera test for the project on Vimeo, published a year ago, which features Anthony Mackie in clothing, make-up, lens/camera and lighting tests. The camera used here was the Red Epic. The actress in the video test is Sarah Butler, but she's not listed on production sheet I received.
Mackie was last seen in Captain America: Winter Soldier, playing Falcon, alongside Chris Evans, in the title role.
