A documentary both Sergio and I have seen and gave thumbs up to. I saw it at Sundance; he at Black Harvest; We both thought it was charming, funny and inspirational. So, now you know you have to see it as well, when it officially opens in limited release, on October 21st.

Before we first wrote about the film last year, I doubt most folks knew that the person who voices Elmo (the extremely popular Sesame Street muppet) was a black man. If you did, feel free to pad yourself on the back twice.

titled Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey, and directed by Constance Marks, the documentary will introduce you to the unlikely man behind the puppet – the heart and soul of Elmo – Kevin Clash.

Clash officially became a puppeteer on Sesame Street in 1984, and has been the man behind Elmo since then. He has won Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series for his work as Elmo, and Hoots the Owl, on Sesame Street, 7 straight years in a row - 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and again in 2009.

The film opens on first in New York at the IFC Center, and will then expand to more cities in November.

You're encouraged to check out the film's website HERE for a listing of what cities it'll screen in and when.

A trailer has been released, exclusive to the mothership, indieWIRE, and I've embedded it below:

On paper I had no freekin interest AT ALL in seeing this movie, but the trailer done changed my mind. Looks really great!

He was on Oprah, so a lot of people should know he is black by now

I thought everyone knew Elmo was black after the Tickle Me Elmo craze. Kevin did Jar Jar Binks too right?

Not only did I know that a black guy does Elmo's voice, I knew that the guy's name is Kevin. I love Elmo and I am looking forward to seeing this movie.

I saw this documentary in a sold out theater at "Full Frame Documentary Festival" in Durham, NC earlier this year. I ABSOLUTELY loved it. Very inspiring and uplifting!
