Two comic book-related stories posted on the same day on S&A, and both have something to do with Storm; has to be a record! Although, this story doesn't have a movie attached to it... not yet anyway.

First, read the comic panel in full below, if you haven't already.

The story, which I learned about from thanks to our friends at both BleedingCool.com and ComicBook.com, goes as follows:

In this week’s issue of Avengers Vs X-Men, one of Marvel’s most prominent married couples, Storm and Black Panther, who also happen to be two of Marvel's most prominent black superhero characters, are no longer a couple!

That's right, it's over, as you can see in the panel below. Black Panther, aka the High Priest of the Panther Clan, has annulled it, sending Storm, aka Ororo Munroe, packing.

But why?

What I learned from the brief research I did is that, Black Panther's home, Wakanda, suffered major damage thanks to an attack from the Phoenix; apparently, while Wakandans were fighting the Phoenix, Black Panther's wife, Storm, who has super powers of her own, and whow could've been present, using her powers to fight alongside him, was instead hanging out with her X-Men pals, trying to save their own asses... or something like that.

Marvel fans, correct me on that if I'm wrong.

So, it looks like Black Panther is all pissed off now.

That seems a little drastic doesn't it? Was there some other ish accumulating over the 6 years they were married, and this was simply the final straw for Black Panther? Or is he just throwing a temper tantrum, and in a future issue, they'll kiss and have some good make-up sex?

From all I've read about this online this afternoon, this news apparently a pretty big deal in the Marvel universe, and some seem genuinely taken by surprise, and are asking question about what it all means.

ComicBook.com suggests that it's may be setting the stage for a Black Panther movie, because one would be impossible with him married to Storm? Why? 20th Century Fox owns the film rights to Storm, the character, not Marvel Studios (certainly not outright), while Marvel Studios owns Black Panther solely. So ComicBook.com's point is, given that it was revealed (though not confirmed) some months ago that Marvel is indeed prepping a Black Panther movie, this end to the relationship between Black Panther and Storm would make it easier for Marvel Studios to push forward with their Black Panther movie, without worrying about Storm being in the picture, and dealing with 20th Century Fox for rights.

That's their hypothesis, not mine. But an interesting one.

Apparently, the marriage between the two characters was said to have been done hastily, and unexpectedly, which divided fans those who were enthusiastic for "a high-profile story that depicted black superheroes in a positive light, versus those who believed that whole thing seemed gimmicky and that there was something vaguely racist about just deciding one day that a pair of superheroes of color would get married, having little in common besides popularity and skin color."

All very fascinating to learn, as I read about how deep this rabbit hole goes.

But I'll leave the rest to you guys who follow this stuff closely to discuss and shed further light on.

This is where I get off...

Here's the full comic panel from this week's issue of Avengers Vs X-Men:

You consider Black Panther an "Iconic" black superhero? Seriously?!? Black Panther is a joke. What about Spawn, Blade or Luke Cage. Really, can Black Panther bring in the fans? No, that is why Storm was brought in. As a "solo superhero" he would never bring in the numbers that Blade or Spawn has. Even non-comic book fans can usually identify either Blade or Spawn.

Storm subservient to white men? Are you kidding?! She was the leader of the X-men and her own crews. If you think Storm is subservient then you really don't understand her character.

Quit pulling the race card and calling Black Panther a "brotha". You are just bringing everyone to agree with the stereotype. Stop judging people by their descent or race instead of their character or actions.

Slow down true believers! This brake up , as with most things in the comics is temporary.

Storm & T' Challa are soul mates from early childhood. It was not done quickly or as some stunt. Just read their origins in marvel universe from 1986. They met as kids in Africa way before they were heroes.
But fear not.... They get back together .... And have a son named Azari !!!!! nuff said!!!!

The Storm/Black Panther marriage was one of the best story-lines in Marvel history. It showed that they would do something to reflect Africans and African American in a positive light. The separation shows that they were not willing to go far enough. I'm disappointed with the break-up and please don't match Storm with that barbarian Wolverine, but undoubtedly they will.

THANK GOD she's free of that deus- ex hoser. Here's to Storm getting the great writing and great arc's she deserves without consideration of the hoser without actual super-powers who can magically put the Silver Surfer in a headlock.

Bring back Forge; he was absolutely the perfect match for my Ororo. T'challa is, and always will be, a complete tool of a super hero.

This is disappointing. I am very disappointed with MARVEL with this decision that they have made. True enough some might say that this relationship was gimmicky, but truth be told this was MARVEL's chance and opportunity to do something GREAT with two of the most ICONIC Black superheroes in the history of comics. Instead they made them nothing more but a statistical meaningless couple just to gain publicity and keep the MARVEL brand out there. But to what extent? That you would not only offend these characters fans but African Americans in general. It's a shame that l cannot name not one black couple in MARVEL comics or hell comics in general. Don't get me wrong l have nothing against interracial couples because love is love and love is colorless but COME ON can we get more African American couples out there because their are still some surviving African American couples out here in the world geesh.

NOW What does this mean for both Storm and Black Panther? Well, for Storm l hear that she's getting with Wolverine and for T'Challa l don't know. But it's just aggervaiting to see how they really FUCKED this couple up when it could have been a GREAT couple.

MARVEL I'M DONE AND HAVE BEEN DONE WITH YOU and YOUR SHIT

It seems you guys don't know that Storm & BP knew each other way before she was an X-man. The met on her trek across Africa when they were both very young. They've had a close relationship for decades. It sucks that Marvel chose to break them up.

  • Real Characters | September 18, 2012 9:40 PMReply

Did anyone actually read the X-men or Avengers comics? I was a long time X-men fan and sort of Avengers fan, I remember when Storm fell in love with Forge a native American, and it was moving to me. There was another time when they had paired Storm with Wolverine not sure if it was in the comics but the Fox animation had a one shot story. It was well written. When Storm got together with T'Challa it felt sort of forced to me. Put the two African characters together and lets be politically correct. It was OK and had a lot of press but only 15-min of fame and then yawn. I didn't like the break up, it makes T'Challa look very bad.

Love that Storm is finally free of Black Panther, hate the fact that their marriage was ended so coldly. Give me a break here, their marriage was going down the drain for awhile, but really? Ugh! Marvel you've disappointed me once again. Redeem yourselves and match Storm with Logan.

  • Ian | August 31, 2012 5:10 PM

Naw, longtime Storm fans know that Ororo belongs with Forge.

  • Vasqueezy | August 11, 2012 11:43 PMReply

I've heard nothing but praise for the marriage between Black Panther and Storm. And I considered it a natural and smart pairing of characters in terms of story design while the pairing retained--in some instances enhanced--the nobility the characters deserve. In deciding to annul his marriage to Storm, he acted completely in character as Black Panther is a king, first, and husband, second; Storm understood (or T'Challa thought) her role as Queen, which meant following T'Challa's lead, particularly in times of national crises. Storm choose to disregard her primary responsibility as Queen and proved herself unworthy to serve as Queen of Wakanda. Wakanda's place as one the most technologically and spiritually advanced country on earth--since the beginning of mankind--was due to its unique monopoly over vibranium, its gift of wisdom and knowledge by the goddess Bast and due to never having been conquered and exploited by a foreign power. Namor was the first to destroy Wakanda, an honorary distinction for Namor considering his arrogance, but this act threatened to destroy the symbolic and material primacy of Wakanda in the eyes of the world. Wakanda (and it's African people) was a city that showed the world what humanity can and should be, a beacon of intellectual and spiritual progress for the rest of the humanity. Why do you think the Watcher was present at the wedding? Storm did not understand how important being the Queen of Wakanda truly is to the Wakandan legacy and to her King, T'Challa. Black Panther made the right decision, as a man and king. You can't turn a "ho" into a housewife. Unless, of course, that "ho" reflects deeply about her indescretions, makes the right choices and never, ever crosses the line again.

  • Bamurphy | September 25, 2012 5:54 PM

I will disagree with you on that subject for two reasons. Fantastic four #608 came out before this comic was released. In it, the Panther god forwarns T'Challa of the oncoming destruction. As a King and a husband he should have told her of the things the Panther God spoke to him. Which leads to my 2nd argument. Since the pre-Doom war series where he secretly meets with Namor only to be ambushed shortly afterwards by Doom, the Black Panther has been secretive with Storm (his wife). When the Doomwars took place, it made since, but since then everything he has done has been secretive and cold. Especially considering the fact that he was no longer King, as a husband, his actions were unacceptable to his wife. Not to mention that the Panther God appointed Storm as queen during the X-Men worlds apart series. Had he told her what was told to him by his diety, then she would have been there, but if you noticed in the 2nd AvX the main argument between the two is around the secrets that have been kept. So personally I think your argument is bias and lacks the evidence to support your case. She saved their country and then even laid her life to give him back his when he should have been dead. So she did more than just be a housewife. Really story is a petty lil rich boy that hasnt learned how to grow up yet.

  • Umbra | August 11, 2012 11:44 AMReply

Not Drastic when he lost family, friends and his country left in ruins. She Also took a strike force into Wakanda, with a ex-nazi (Dr. Nemesis) as a part of her squad, *after* Scott told her too eliminate any Avengers she finds. So "T'challa" it wasn't domestic abuse on his part...it was self defense.

The writers have thrown her and the marriage under the bus. Because of some of the reasons listed about fanboys..

  • Rome | August 7, 2012 11:55 PMReply

In a weird way it's appropriate. The relationship was shoehorned in just so they could do a high profile black marriage in the books. A few years later they still can't figure out how to sell a Black Panther book so they annul it just as meaninglessly. A concocted divorce for a gimmicky marriage.

  • WB | August 4, 2012 8:26 AMReply

I never believed Storm was gonna be in a Black Panther movie anyway. His love interst would most likely be Monica Lynne (for those who are wondering, she is black).

  • Black People | August 4, 2012 1:53 AMReply

Truth is, white males hated this pairing. An exotic, foreign, goddess married to a black man. Blasphemy? Why? Storm was seen as a white woman and the property of White people (X-Men). Storm- Blue eyes, long straight white hair, light-skinned, goddess powers, but subservient to white males. Marries black man, becomes equal to king in all black kingdom, free to do as she wishes with a black man. White males were fuming with rage. Black males are not allowed relationships even with black women. Black males can have sex, but no intimacy. White males mad that a black woman married a black man. Only in America.

  • SM | October 10, 2012 4:43 AM

Lol I was trolling just to find one of these comments.

  • Melissa | August 3, 2012 5:42 PMReply

Comic fans hated this pairing with a passion! No way was it gonna last. Storm was 'supposed' to be in love with a 'relatable' white male character, like all other fictional black women in comics/movies/tv/etc.

  • Ashley | August 17, 2012 6:36 PM

    You talking bout Wolverine?

  • Donella | August 3, 2012 12:08 PMReply

    Wow. That's a disappointment.

  • Ashton Morris | August 3, 2012 11:52 AMReply

Only way I want to see a Black Panther movie is it's starring Chiwetel Ejiofor. This is Hollywood's chance to make him the star that Spike Lee, Denzel Washington, David Mamet, and most Stephen Frears have tired to display that he is a A-list actor. Chiwetel Ejiofor to me is the strongest actor under 40 and to be has the talent to carry a film which he has done and to steal moment. He obviously takes every role he does seriously. He can handle fighting roles I think the best out of all the potential candidates you have to place in this role i.e. Redbelt, Four Brothers, and Serenity and an superb actor.

Someway say this isn't true. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ALM | August 2, 2012 9:53 PMReply

Why must they break up the only married pair of African/African American superheroes? And breaking up over something like this? Chile, please....... Black Panther and Storm could be married and have a movie. Spiderman had Mary Jane and Gwen Stacey. Even if he wasn't married to either of them in the live action movies, both women were still very much present in the movies. This gives further credence to the collective that maintains that Hollywood conspires to not have African/African American couples in big budget movies.

  • COMMENT POLICE | August 3, 2012 8:37 PM

@ALM....I THINK THAT THE BREAKUP IS BOGUS, NOT YOUR COMMENT. SO...YEAH.

  • ALM | August 3, 2012 8:28 PM

@ Comment Police: You have the right to your opinion that it's "bogus", but there is a collective of intellectuals that believe that there has been a purposeful decision throughout Hollywood to limit the # of African/African American couples in loving relationships/love scenes in the U.S. I attended an industry forum last year where that very statement was made by a well known African American author (who I will choose to keep anonymous). Name one film in the U.S. that has grossed at least $150 million that has a love scene with either African or African American main characters in that love scene.

  • COMMENT POLICE | August 2, 2012 10:15 PM

    THAT IS VERY BOGUS.

  • T'Challa | August 2, 2012 8:47 PMReply

Bullshit!!! Let me tell you something, many fanboys, (probably White guys) have been campaigning for Storm to divorce BP for years now. They couldn't handle it that THE hottest & most powerful Black woman in the comic book world actually married a brotha. If she had married Wolverine, it'd be all good. To make it worse, they actually had BP physically knock Storm out in fight scene.. domestic abuse!!

I'm pretty disgusted with Marvel, not just the divorce, but the way in which the Black Panther character has been treated in the comics these past few years.

  • Curtis | August 2, 2012 9:18 PM

Wow, really? They brought domestic abuse into the BP/Storm story? Damn. They went all the way too real.
