Thinking of what was at the heart of Ava DuVernay's Film Independent Forum keynote speech over the weekend, to, essentially, just do it (a la Nike) - the work, that is - these guys are a great example of that concept put to practice.

It's all about the work, not the talk, and they've certainly been successfully prolific, churning out well-received content.

I'm referring to the Black&Sexy.TV crew, along with Issa Rae (the ABG).

Their latest offering is a spoof of the popular Netflix drama series Orange Is The New Black, aptly and hilariously-called, Orange Is The New Black & Sexy.

They had me at the title...

The detes:

Jessa Zarubica (It's not Porn...it's HBO) and Issa Rae (Awkward Black Girl) star in Orange Is The New Black & Sexy, a satire on the popular Netflix series Orange is the New Black. The parody pokes fun at Piper (Zarubica) as she becomes enchanted by the black prison clique led by Taystee (Issa Rae) and experiences her own metamorphosis. Other current cultural trends (Miley Cyrus, Julianna Hough) are referenced while paying homage to the hit series in this hysterical mash up. Orange is the New Black & Sexy is a Black&Sexy.TV and Dayna Lynne North/Loud Sista Production, co directed by Dennis Dortch and Numa Perrier.

Yikes, that fell apart quickly and never went anywhere. Great production value and "Poussey" (Jeanine?) was the standout - great presence and radiant. Otherwise, a complete and total waste.

I don't know. As parody, it's severely lacking, satirizes nothing really--but instead, simply emulates for the most part. Well-produced and acted, though. Has potential to be more focused, funny overall, and biting. I'd tune in again, hoping for more from its obviously-talented cast.
