Since it's black movie month, Black Enterprise magazine decided to name 10 of the top-grossing independent Black films of all time.

The list contains a few names you'd expect to see like Melvin Van Peebles hit film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song but you'll also find a few surprises.

So what films made the cut? In no particular order:

-Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song
-She's Gotta Have It
-Trois
-Sankofa
-Precious
-Hotel Rwanda
-Paid In Full
-Ray
-Daughters of the Dust
-I Got The Hook Up

You can read the complete article HERE.

@blaqbird Ray was independently produced, but since it eventually found a distributor in Universal Pictures I agree that it's a real stretch to include it on the list.

The link didn't work for me.

I'm interested to know the budget vs. profit. How did these movies rank according to gross sales? In other words, which one made the most money? I think that's important because many times I believe we judge or define "success" using the wrong barometers.

I thought Eve's Bayou and Sidney and Bill Cosby's trilogy would be somewhere in the mix. Then again, I don't what constitutes "indie"? I do know that Eve's Bayou was produced by Samuel Jackson.
