The Montreal International Black Film Festival is proud to kick start its 10th edition with the North American Premiere of Boris Lojkine’s Hope, on Tuesday September 23, 7PM at Imperial Theater. Hope earned the French director/screenwriter the SACD award at this year’s Cannes Festival’s Semaine de la Critique. This is the first fiction film for Lojkine who is known for his Vietnam-centric documentaries Ceux qui restent and Les Ames errantes.

"We are very proud to open the festival with such a moving film. This is a touching and powerful story about humanity, love and exile. A deeply moving film!" stated Fabienne Colas, President and Founder of the festival.

Hope portrays of the reality of the tragic conditions of the exile of Africans travelling through the Sahara to reach Europe. Deep in the desert, on his way to Europe, Léonard, a young man from Cameroon, rescues Hope, a Nigerian woman. In a fiercely hostile world where you have to stay with your own people to stay safe, these two try to find their way and love each other.

“The power of Hope lies in its unflinching portrayal of the reality of the tragic conditions of the exile of Africans travelling through the Sahara to reach Europe. The film tells this story through an incredible tale of love, which allows this oft ignored situation to reach us. ‘As long as there is another person,’ wrote Serge Daney, ‘there is hope for filming.’ Hope is the story of this hope.” - Charles Tesson, Semaine de la Critique, Cannes Festival.

The 10th Montreal International Black Film Festival, created by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, will be held from September 23 to 28, 2014 and is presented by Global Montreal.

About the Montreal International Black Film Festival – MIBFF

The Montreal International Black Film Festival (MIBFF) was created in 2005 by the Fabienne Colas Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting cinema, art and culture. As Canada’s biggest Black Film Festival, MIBFF’s mission is to stimulate the development of the independent film industry and to foster the creation of films on international black realities. The Festival wants to promote a different kind of cinema: cinema from both here and abroad that doesn't always make it to the silver screen. We showcase ground-breaking cinema that both moves and shocks us, all while raising awareness. Join us for a fresh look at black cinema from all four corners of the globe! www.montrealblackfilm.com
