Brazil TV - White Woman Becomes Black Woman To Live Out Fantasy Of Having Sex w/ Black Man

Shadow and Act By Courtney | Shadow and Act December 23, 2012 at 8:46PM

I suppose the suggestion here is that, if the world were indeed coming to an end (referencing 12/21/2012), this would be one thing on every white woman's to-do list - screw a black man. But not only that, they would darken their skin, and wear afro wigs, seemingly to to embody and experience the moment as black women... or something like that.

I don't really know what to do with this, so I'll just report the story and let you guys discuss and break it down. Or it could just be that I'm numb.

The news comes courtesy of our friends at the Black Women Of Brazil blog, whom we've linked to several times in the past:

Globo TV tries to spread the in-vogue belief in the end of the world on the cabalistic day of 12/21/2012, a touch of anticipated spectacle on the couch. In its parody of the end of the world on TV, the series "Como aproveitar o fim do mundo" ("How to take advantage of the end of the world") presents an episode in which a white actress, Aline Moraes, is made up as a black woman in order to accomplish one of her “last desires”: to fuck a black man. I used the word “fuck” because I find it more consistent with the final moment in time, straight up with no sweetener or false morality! After all, she only has a short time to accomplish the act. In the minds of the authors, by the fictional scene they created, this is one of those things that they believe some white women want at the last minute. The critical conclusion that they ultimately reached is consistent with the policy and standard imagery that Globo TV and its clan of writers commonly produce and exhibit through racist stereotypes offered to the public as entertainment.

The photo diptych above is of the actress made up as a black woman, and as herself.

I believe we've seen episodes in the media in which white people have "gone undecover" or pretended to be black people, usually to expose racism within some institution. But nothing quite like this (which is scripted, by the way).

I guess this was supposed to be funny?

So many layers; so many questions, like why does she have to "become" a black woman to fulfill her bucket list fantasy of screwing a black man? Interracial relationships aren't uncommon in Brazil. It's not like we're talking about an era in which interracial coupling was practically a crime punishable by death.

Like I said, is the point here to suggest that by "becoming" a black woman, the experience would be more "genuine," or that maybe black men would treat her differently in bed because they see a black woman (even though she's not), than they would if they knew they were having sex with a white woman?

Or is this just to stir up controversy and attract eyeballs?

From what I understand about representations of blacks in Brazil in the media, depictions are limited and narrowly-defined (not-so unlike here in the USA, although it's worse), which is problematic when you consider how significant the African-descendant population is in that country (compared to the USA).

I'd like to believe that something like this wouldn't fly here in the USA, but who knows - especially when you're essentially powerless, or at least it seems that way.

I should note that we haven't seen the episode here in the USA, so I'm going based on what the Black Women Of Brazil have to say about it. In theory, the idea could fly as a work of satire, let's say, maybe offering some critique or commentary on stereotypes, fetishism, the exotification of groups, and more. But from all I've read about the episode, and Globo TV, it doesn't sound like it's satire, unfortunately.

But you should read the full report on this Globo TV fiasco, by visiting the Black Women In Brazil blog HERE. They ask and try to answer some of the questions that come up, as well as give a little history on similar kinds of occurences on Brazilian TV, suggesting this isn't all that uncommon - although maybe this has been the most extreme so far.
