From the press release:
New Video’s Flatiron Film Company and Variance Films announced today that they have partnered for the theatrical release of José Padilha’s record-breaking Brazilian crime thriller, ELITE SQUAD: THE ENEMY WITHIN (TROPA DE ELITE 2). The film will open in New York City on November 11th, 2011 at the AMC Empire 25 in Times Square, and at Laemmle’s Sunset 5 in Los Angeles on November 18th, 2011. A platform expansion to top markets across the country will immediately follow.
I've actually been hearing a lot about this flick; mostly very, very positive, and I really need to see it. It's actually been screening for press lately (also playing film festivals), and I just haven't RSVP'd for any yet. With this news, and the reviews I've been reading of it, I'm definitely going to get myself into a screening soon!
Although, I probably should check out the first The Elite Squad, which was released in 2008. That film won the Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival.
Also worth noting, the sequel, released in Brazil late last year, is reportedly the country's highest grossing domestic film release of all time!
Wagner Moura is Captain Nascimento, commander-in-chief of Rio de Janeiro's BOPE (Special Police Operations Battalion), later promoted to sub-Secretary of Security for the State. After a disastrous operation on a prison riot, Nascimento gets caught in a bloody political dispute that involves not only government officials, but also deadly paramilitary groups known as the militias. Nascimento quickly emerges as victim of his own success - in tackling Rio's drug gangs, he creates a vacuum filled by protection rackets supported by corrupt police. Dismantling the complex web of allegiances is a job made all the more dangerous by Nascimento's realisation that the very people that he should be able to rely on to support his mission could be his deadliest enemies. Adding to this professional challenge are his troubles at home, as Nasciemento's ex-wife is now married to the newly elected State Representative, and his thirteen year old son is becoming increasingly estranged from his intense and emotionally distant father. However, soon enough, his professional and personal life violently collide as he realises his work attracts danger to his family. Is it too late to save his loved ones as well as the city he has worked so hard to protect?
Director José Padilha has also gotten Hollywood's attention; earlier this year, it was announced that he would direct the RoboCop reboot film.
