Dr. Preston Burke

This Thursday, Isaiah Washington will return to reprise his original role as surgeon Dr. Preston Burke on ABC's Shonda Rhimes medical drama Grey's Anatomy, 7 years after he was dropped from the show, after on-set controversies involving his Grey's co-stars T.R. Knight and Patrick Dempsey.

It's not a permanent return, however. Washinton will be guest-starring as his former character in an episode of the drama series. His return comes timed as the show preps to say goodbye to Sandra Oh's character, Cristina, who was engaged to marry Washington's Burke, prior to his exit.

Fans of the series will remember that, in Dr. Burke's final episode, he was a no-show for his wedding to Cristina.

In a statement about Washington's return, showrunner Shonda Rhimes said:

"It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey - he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”

Surely that episode will likely be a ratings hit for ABC when it airs this Thursday.

Ahead of that broadcast, watch a preview of the episode, plus a clip below:

Burke is awesome and more interesting than Dempsey. But Dam it if that annoying Ellen "meridithGrey" is still "acting" God she is horrible.... And loves to dish on her costars offering up opinions that don't concern her. U know I just started watching GA a week ago on Netflix... The Entire last 7 years I thought that Katherine Heigl was the snow's lead.... I had never heard of that Ellen woman before 5 days ago. I can't even watch the show anymore because I can't stand the callousness of Meredith Grey, nor Ellen P's horrible acting, whiny voice, and flippant attitude.

Although there is a small contingency that might hate Isaiah Washington, it's apparent that there are a lot of Burke fans because of all the people who watched last night (including myself).

If Charlie Sheen can revamp his career then Washington, who hasn't had any other problems since the Grey's debacle that I know of, should be able to learn from his mistake and move on. It was an unfortunate turn of phrase and I am sure lessons have been learned by many about it's misuse

I'm going to side with James on this one. The facts don't look good for Shonda.
