The Central Park Five

Sergio already sang the praises of this documentary last week, so I'll just summarize what he said before sending you over to the clips.

It's a new film from Ken Burns, titled, The Central Park Five, which Burns co-directed with his daughter Sarah Burns, and his son-in-law David McMahon.

The documentary examines the case of the Central Park rape, in the late 1980s, that triggered strong emotions in New Yorkers, and the sensational media storm across the US that followed. It turned out to be a tale of racial injustice.

Five black and Latino teenagers were arrested and convicted for the brutal rape and assault of Tricia Meili, only to be released after the real attacker confessed in 2002.

The film will be shown as a Special Screening at 7.45 pm tonight, May 24, at the Cannes Film Festival, where Burns hopes to sell the film to international distributors.

As he was quoted; "We want to release it theatrically because the running time makes it managable and there's something urgent about it."

The documentary is scheduled to be later broadcast on PBS in 2013 or 2014. A long time to wait for it, so let's hope sometime before then, it'll get a theatrical relese.

3 clips from the film have turned up on the Cannes website. I'm not as tech-savvy as some others around here, so I can't figure out how to get them to embed here on S&A because there's no embed option. But I'm sure there's a way to extract them.

So until I'm able to figure something out, or the videos show up on YouTube, you'll have to go to the Cannes website to watch all 3 clips. And you should; I really liked the look and feel of what I saw, making me even more anxious to see the final result.
