I'm wondering if you know of any good young established black actors who could play 19 years old? I'm developing a project and the lead is 19, male, coming of age, learning what it takes to become a man before becoming a champion. It's an indie film and I need someone who can carry a film on his back, drama, comedy, physical stuff too. Let me know if you have any ideas of who I should be looking at.
I thought about his question for a little bit, but realized how difficult it was for me to come up with names that fit his criteria - established black actor, can play 19, and can carry a film.
I was stumped, believe or not, as the names that immediately came to me where primarily musicians who'd turned to acting (like Bow Wow and Chris Brown); but surely there are others, and I'm just blanking on names, like Michael B. Jordan, or Brandon T. Jackson, Evan Ross (all in their mid-20s), or even Jaden Smith (but can he play 19? And would he even be interested in doing a small indie drama?). Can Lance Gross or Mehcad Brooks play 19? Chadwick Boseman?
I also thought maybe the filmmaker would have more luck looking at theater/stage actors.
As we've addressed in previous posts, this speaks to a lack of young, up-and-coming black actors who are being groomed to assume the roles left vacant by the aging older black actors.
But I told the filmmaker that I could post his request here, and see what names you folks mention that you think will fit his criteria, and he agreed to let me do that; so here ya go.
Chime in...

Maybe the filmmaker would have more luck with talent that isn't necessarily "established."
I, and many of my actor friends, can (and do) play 19, are talented, and can carry a film, easily.

Like my friend Preston Davis said, "I have to nominate... myself". ARY KATZ. I've carried my share of indie features and held strong supporting roles in a few studio pics and episodics. Most recently and most notably I held my own on screen opposite DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood's 'J.Edgar'. My materials are avail on IMDB http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2315175/ or my personal website www.arykatz.com *If you like what you see, you know how to mind me*
@Preston- I hope i see you at this audition brother, blessings always.

What about Corbin Bleu the guy from High School Musical? Corbin is young, attractive, and he can act. Tristan Wilds is also a good choice.
AccidentalVisitor | July 18, 2012 11:50 PM
First of all let's take Tristan Wilds off the table. He seems to have lost his way as an actor ever since joining 90210. Far too often he does the tiring look-away routine when speaking to another character in a scene, as if he is gathering himself every time he pulls his eyes away. And he is leaving his mouth hanging open too often when he is supposed to instead be displaying more natural expressions of emotions. Hasn't been the same since "The Wire". But all may not be lost. Michael B. Jordan had some similar difficulties when he joined All My Children but since then has been on a roll. So maybe it is the result of the bad writing. Speaking of Jordan he should be in the running. And how about Arlen Escarpeta (American Dreams)? Is he too old? Evan Ross is another name tossed around and for good reason. But toss in Marcus Carl Franklin (Lakawanna Blues), Maxx Brawer (Twelve), Maestro Harrell (The Wire), Denzel Whitaker (The Great Debaters), Eka Darville (Spartacus), Daniel Kaluuya (Johnny English Reborn), Trevor Jackson (Eureka), Solomon Glave (Wuthering Heights), Philip Johnson (America) although he hasn't worked in...forever, and Eugene Jones III (Towelhead). The suggestion of John Boyega ain't bad either. Yeah, a lot of these guys aren't American but, what can you do? A bigger problem is that some of them don't get enough work.

I'm a HUGE Michael B. Jordan fan.

There are very few "established black actors" (meaning with a recognizable face) under 35 that could "carry" (meaning draw a crowd for and perform well in) a drama or comedy.
Neziah Green | July 18, 2012 9:58 PM
I could do it. I'm 19, I'm black, and I have an extensive theater background.

In my humble opinion the following are no-brainers; they're outta there. Brandon T Jackson has questionable range and his acting is not convincing. Romeo and Bow Wow can not carry a glass of water across the screen without looking like they're acting. So they damn sure can't carry a whole film. Now, although Evan Ross as done some nice things, I am not completely sold on him carrying a film. I mean, I hear he recieved raves for his performance Mooz-lum, I didn't see what I the fuss was about. Maybe I was distracted by other elements of the film that didn't set well with me. The editing left much to be desired and although I love Roger Guenveur Smith's acting, this part didn't do me. And the extras alway seemed to be just there; out of place and looking like they didn't know what to do with themselves. But now Rotimi Akinosho from Boss on Starz. Hmmmm, great series with a great cast and excellent writing. Although I don't particularly like Rotimi's storyline, his acting has been solid. Don't get me wrong, I am only on the 6th episode (1 hour each) , but from what I've seen, he's holding his own. Denzel Whitaker, 22, but looks younger, could be the one, he has the talent -- for sure. Micheal B. Jordan, with the right direction/director could be the one. And hey, why not give Preston Davis (below) a holler? I mean, he says he's the next BMOC so we gotta give him an "A" for having the courage to toot his own horn - huh.
Torin | July 18, 2012 7:40 PM
OMG -- his name is Rotimi Akinosho -- not character name -- lol
Torin | July 18, 2012 7:30 PM
The young man from Boss on Starz is Darius Morrison -- he is older than 19, but has a young look.
The young man I think should be in the running is Jermaine Crawford age 19 played homeless kid on the Wire on HBO. So, he is an actor, musician, and founder of Code blue.org!! Where he does PSA's for teens/young people using his young actor & musician friends to help teens. Covering topic like -- safe sex, homelessness, & other topic -- kids are faced w today!! NICE...
This kid -- Jacob Latimore age 15 is doing things/ Trever Jackson about age 16 on disney?? Jordan Newt about 16 or 17?? Diggy simmons?? cute kid -- has that it factor?? Ok -- I'm done.

Is this how the industry works? How does one do a PROPER casting call?
Ghost | July 18, 2012 2:33 PM
Arjay Smith-currently on TNT's Perception. He already has one coming out on 9-13 and he's the star in a cast that is otherwise white.Lee Thompson Young on TNT's Rosetti & the other female cop's name. James Tyler Williams. They are all currently on tv shows and could give the movie free press. Wesley Jonathan. Robert Richard. Kenny Blank (or Kenn Michael as he's called). Corbin Bleu. Lil J. Brandon Jay (from Power Rangers). Kevin from Eureka (I can't think of his name) There are plenty-they just tend to be the ones we don't see on black tv shows and movies all the times. Romeo could fit but Bow Wow has burned too many bridges with people to considered-he flopped big time with Lottery Ticket. Now if that war movie he did is good (and I'm hoping it is)-then I would give him a chance.

This reminds me of the hunt for Jamal Wallace. Rob Brown.
The Boys of Summer from The Wire seem like a good place to look. Tristan Wilds? Maestro Harrell? Or maybe Thuliso Dingwall? (Kenard) Or even Dukie? (Jermaine Crawford)
