The 62nd Berlinale International Film Festival awards ceremony occurred Saturday (Feb. 18th) and one delightful surprise that took place was Congolese native and newcomer Rachel Mwanza's "Best Actress" win for her role in the dramatic film War Witch (aka Rebelle).

The 2012 Pan African Film Festival came to a close this evening; the last screening was the eagerly anticipated French TV film/miniseries Toussaint L'Ouverture, which was ultimately the festival's big winner.  L'Ouverture and Jimmy Jean-Louis were awarded top honors for Best Narrative Feature and Best Actor, respectively.

Ruth Negga Wins Best Television Actress Award For "Shirley", At 2012 Irish Film And Television Awards

She was nominated for two 2012 Irish Film And Television Awards; Best Actress in a Lead Role-TV, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role-TV.  Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga managed to walk away with the award for the former this past Saturday night, for her portrayal of Nigerian-Brit music legend Shirley Bassey in the TV-movie Shirley.

Chicken & Egg Pictures - the award-winning hybrid film fund and non-profit production company dedicated to supporting women filmmakers - announced its 2012 Open Call grant recipients today, and it's quite the international list of projects, including stories set in Africa like this one which immediately got my attention.

Scheduled to take place during Oscar weekend (on February 24th) a special spotlight event in Hollywood called Eye on Black, which will see a group of black directors feted, including Ava DuVernay, Bill Duke, Haile gerima, Chris Robinson, and Debbie Allen.
