Not even Battleship with the awesome, blinding force of power known to the world and the cosmos as Rihanna could beat The Avengers this weekend. Once again the Marvel film was No.1 this weekend, while Battleship underperformed, making some $10 million less than what most film box office analysts had predicted.

It’s been a pretty slow weekend news wise. No one is doing anything of note. But at least we still have the weekend box office report and, no surprise, The Avengers came out on top of the box office weekend figures making over $100 million and now has passed the $1 billion gross mark worldwide. The film is now the 11th highest grossing film of all time worldwide and will only go further up on the list. But it still has a way to go before beating the top two, Avatar and Titanic. Damn that James Cameron!

All things considered, not bad at all. The film came in this weekend second after The Avengers. Albeit a very, very distant second, of course, with $8 million, but that's a very solid figure and the fact there were a lot of people who didn't go see the Marvel comic book film and chose Man instead speaks for itself.

It's a generational thing but whenever I hear The Avengers I always immediately think of the late 60's British TV show of the same name that was on the ABC Network with super spies John Steed and Mrs. Emma Peel. (Even N.Y. Times film critic A.O. Scott said the same thing himself in his review of the Marvel super hero film.) Guess you had to be around then at the time. The show was HUGE deal back then and one of absolute favorites as kid.

In the so-called "specialty box office" category for this weekend... 2 films of note, one new, the other 3 weekends old.

For the second weekend in a row Think Like A Man was No.1 at the box office beating all comers inclduing The Five Year Engagement which was predicted to be No. 1 this weekend, but didn't fare any better than fifth place (Actually a very amusing film, but with a turn off title that no doubt hurt its performance)

In the so-called "specialty box office" category... another film that also opened this weekend to strong numbers was Magnolia Pictures's Kevin Macdonald-directed Bob Marley documentary, titled, simply, Marley - a film we've given lots of coverage to on S&A.

I predicted two weeks ago that Think Like A Man would be the film to knock The Hunger Games off of its No.1 box office perch where it's been sitting comfortably for the last month. But does anyone listen to me?

Ahead of Sergio's official box office post tomorrow, I thought I'd jump in here (given that we've got a contest running, and this is apparently the hottest *black film* of the year thus far) and let you all know that, according to Deadline, Think Like A Man is en route to taking the box office crown this weekend, with an estimated $30 million!!
