Weekend B.O. June 8-10 ('Madagascar' Beats 'Prometheus')

It was expected that a family friendly animated film would beat out an R rated sci-fi movie. But for a minute, it looked like Prometheus was going to edge out Madagascar 3 this weekend; it's even more surprising, considering that Madagascar is playing in over 1000 screens more than the Ridley Scott film.

Weekend B.O. June 1-3 (The Mystery That Is Kristen Stewart)

Kristen Stewart is, for me, another one of those "just-how-exactly-did-she-become-a-movie-star?" movie stars. I mean really?  Her screen presence is nil; she has only one expression on her face (either on or off the screen) - that of someone who just got a tooth pulled; and her whole "I'm so uncomfortable this whole Hollywood thing. I wish I was somewhere else" B.S. bit gets on my last nerve.

Just shows you how much I know, which any regular reader of S & A can tell you isn't much. I figured that Men In Black III was going to underperform in its opening weekend release, because I didn't think there was any interest from anyone in a new MIB movie.

Not even Battleship with the awesome, blinding force of power known to the world and the cosmos as Rihanna could beat The Avengers this weekend. Once again the Marvel film was No.1 this weekend, while Battleship underperformed, making some $10 million less than what most film box office analysts had predicted.

In the so-called "specialty box office" category for this past weekend...

Weekend B.O. May 11-13 (But of course "Avengers" is No.1, but "Man" holds on)

It’s been a pretty slow weekend news wise. No one is doing anything of note. But at least we still have the weekend box office report and, no surprise, The Avengers came out on top of the box office weekend figures making over $100 million and now has passed the $1 billion gross mark worldwide. The film is now the 11th highest grossing film of all time worldwide and will only go further up on the list. But it still has a way to go before beating the top two, Avatar and Titanic. Damn that James Cameron!

Weekend B.O. May 4-6 (How Did "Man" Do Against "Avengers"?)

All things considered, not bad at all. The film came in this weekend second after The Avengers. Albeit a very, very distant second, of course, with $8 million, but that's a very solid figure and the fact there were a lot of people who didn't go see the Marvel comic book film and chose Man instead speaks for itself.

It's a generational thing but whenever I hear The Avengers I always immediately think of the late 60's British TV show of the same name that was on the ABC Network with super spies John Steed and Mrs. Emma Peel. (Even N.Y. Times film critic A.O. Scott said the same thing himself in his review of the Marvel super hero film.) Guess you had to be around then at the time. The show was HUGE deal back then and one of absolute favorites as kid.
