Of note this weekend, with respect to new films with people of Africa descent at the center of their narratives, the independently-released documentary, Detropia, which opened on just 1 screen in New York City (at IFC Center), grossed $18,400. Look for announcements of cities it'll expand to for next weekend.

The first weekend of September marks the official end of the summer film season and, as always, looking back this past summer, there were winners and losers this season (including Sparkle, which completely dropped out of the 12 top films of the week, in just two weeks).

I'm not going to deal with that 2016: Obama's America film which did so well this weekend, since Courtney below has done an excellent piece below on the film. Well except to allow me to say that if anyone had made a film on Willard (his real first name - like the rat) Romney and that cult he belongs to that believed that black people were the devil (as Chris Rock accurately said) until recently (and probably still do), who would go see it?

The box office news that will likely be on everyone's lips once the weekend is over, is the strength of the performance of incendiary anti-Obama documentary, 2016: Obama's America, compared to this weekend's opening titles.

Don't say I didn't tell you, but I did. And maybe it's because of the summer doldrums, but Sparkle, and in fact all this weekend's new releases, underperfomed to expectations.

As expected, The Bourne Legacy was No.1, with the political comedy, The Campaign, coming up in the second slot; while The Dark Knight Rises dropped to No.3.

As expected, The Dark Knight Rises beat the action packed (but PG-13 tame), tedious and totally devoid of personality (compared to Paul Verhoeven's 1990 original) Total Recall, without a doubt, one of the least neccessary remakes in recent memory.

Because of the Colorado shooting tragedy on early Friday morning, most box office trackers, as well as Warner Bros, announced that they would not report the weekend's box office take on Sunday afternoon as usual, but would postpone it until Monday.

In so-called specialty box office... 2 indie films of note that opened over the weekend.
