Exclusive: Jimmy Jean-Louis Talks "Toussaint L'Ouverture" Role and Film (PAFF Premiere)

Casting Jimmy Jean-Louis in the lead role of the Haitian revolutionist was a no-brainer to the producers of the French 2, two-part film Toussaint L'Ouverture. Born in Haiti to a poor family, and moving to France at the age of twelve, Jean-Louis ambition and talent persevered amidst struggling to find work as an artist in the streets of Paris. A fluent multi-linguist in French, Creole, English and Spanish, Jean-Louis is the Founder and President of Hollywood Unites for Haiti, a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the aid of the citizens in Haiti (visit www.hufh.org for contribution info).

Producer and DV Republic founder Warrington Hudlin and film historian Ed Guerrero have joined the group of noted voices from film and entertainment slated to moderate in-depth filmmaker Q&A's at this year's New Voices in Black Cinema Festival. The Festival takes place at BAM Rose Cinemas and other locations in Brooklyn, NY, February 16 - 20.

Another highlight from the upcoming New Voices In Black Cinema Film Festival (which runs from February 17th through the 20th at BAM Cinemas in Brooklyn, NY) is a searing drama titled The Tested, a film we've covered quite a bit here on S&A over the last couple of years.

One of the highlights of the upcoming New Voices In Black Cinema Festival which begins its 2nd annual run in Brooklyn, NYC next week Friday at BAM Cinemas, February 17th through the 20th, is University of California-Davis film professor, Christine Acham's documentary on the making of the Ivan Dixon-directed political firebrand of a film, The Spook Who Sat by the Door, adapted from Sam Greenlee's novel.

In eager anticipation for his new film High Chicago, premiering stateside at the Pan African Film Festival this month, I had the pleasure of interviewing director and producer Alfons Adetuyi, who shared his inspiration for his first full length feature directorial effort. High Chicago tells the story of family man in a small Michigan town with big dreams, who literally takes a big gamble to fullfil them, and to ultimately provide for his family.

I won't arrive in Los Angeles for the festival until the 16th of this month, but thankfully the "genius bastard" himself, Mr Brandon Wilson (find him on Twitter HERE) who lives in Los Angeles, and who has covered events for S&A in LA in the past (you should have read all excellent his reviews of films at the UCLA LA Rebellion retrospective last fall) will be representing Shadow And Act in a panel discussion titled Diverisity In Film Criticism at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles exactly one week from today, February 13th, from 5:30pm to 7pm.

The documentary feature Uprising: Hip Hop & The LA Riots, directed by Mark Ford and produced by Wesley Jones, is making its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival next month. The film explores the influence of Hip Hop in the 80's and early 90's, which may have served as a catalyst, to the L.A. riots 20 years ago.
