It's been over a year since I saw Venus Noire (Black Venus) at the New York Film Festival in the fall of 2010, and it never received a stateside release; actually I'm not sure it got much of a release outside of the international film festival circuit and a few European territories.

Thsoe of you in the Los Angeles area... if you haven't seen Victoria Mahoney's impressive and, dare I say, *controversial* (given some of the reactions to it I read as it toured the film festival circuit) feature film debut, Yelling To The Sky, you will have an opportunity to do so when it screens (twice) at the upcoming Pan African Film Festival which starts next week!

The 17-min film Okechukwu, helmed by Anayo Amuzi, is part of the narrative short lineup in next month's Pan African Film Festival. The Nigerian/US production tells the story of a Nigerian man who is new to America, "works in a dead-end job and lives with his brother and his wife. While searching for a new job, he discovers what truly makes him happy."

Directed by Robert Philpson, the short documentary T'Ain't Nobody's Bizness: Queer Blues Divas of the 1920s, will be featured next month at the Pan African Film Festival. The doc explores the private sexual lives of lesbian and bisexual "blues divas" in the 1920's, a time when the subject was even more taboo than it is today, and how these women created "a space for themselves", as they struggled with the alienation faced from society.

Glad that this new Canadian-produced feature I previously profiled enthusiastically on S&A (and which was received just as enthusiastically) is finally set to make it USA premiere; and it will do so at the upcoming Pan African Film Festival which begins February 9th.

One of the films that was on my Sundance 2012 to-see list was Sheldon Candis' feature film debut, LUV, which stars Common, Michael Rainey Jr, Dennis Haysbert, Danny Glover, Charles S. Dutton and other; however, as you've probably noticed, I didn't review it... yet.

The Slamdance Film Festival doesn't get as much *shine* as the Sundance Film Festival, even though they both take place in Park City, UT, and at almost exactly the same time.

Scheduled to make its world premiere in the Panorama Documentary section is Dagmar Shultz's Audre Lorde - The Berlin Years 1984 to 1992 is an untold chapter (the Berlin years) of the late writer, poet and activist, Caribbean child of immigrants from Grenada, who died rather young at 58 years old in 1992.
