In eager anticipation for his new film High Chicago, premiering stateside at the Pan African Film Festival this month, I had the pleasure of interviewing director and producer Alfons Adetuyi, who shared his inspiration for his first full length feature directorial effort. High Chicago tells the story of family man in a small Michigan town with big dreams, who literally takes a big gamble to fullfil them, and to ultimately provide for his family.

I won't arrive in Los Angeles for the festival until the 16th of this month, but thankfully the "genius bastard" himself, Mr Brandon Wilson (find him on Twitter HERE) who lives in Los Angeles, and who has covered events for S&A in LA in the past (you should have read all excellent his reviews of films at the UCLA LA Rebellion retrospective last fall) will be representing Shadow And Act in a panel discussion titled Diverisity In Film Criticism at the Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles exactly one week from today, February 13th, from 5:30pm to 7pm.

Director Abdoulaye Dao's Une Femme Pas Comme Les Autres (An Uncommon Woman) is a film that Tambay first told us about last summer.  You can see it this week when it's screened at the 15th Annual Festival of Films In French, being held at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The documentary feature Uprising: Hip Hop & The LA Riots, directed by Mark Ford and produced by Wesley Jones, is making its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival next month. The film explores the influence of Hip Hop in the 80's and early 90's, which may have served as a catalyst, to the L.A. riots 20 years ago.

Scheduled to make its world premiere at the 2012 SXSW Film Festival is Brooklyn Castle, director Katie Dellamaggiore's documentary, which focuses on an inner-city junior high school (I.S. 318), once deemed one of New York City's mediocre, where the vast majority of students are from homes living below the poverty level; but it also happens to currently be a school that has the best (the most wins) junior high school chess team in the country.
