Trudie Styler's Maven Pictures Producing Atlanta-Set Hip-Hop Comedy Penned By Kenny Smith Jr

Maven Pictures (Trudie Styler and Celine Ratray) and Federal Films (David Schulhof and Monte Lipman) will produce the Kenny Smith Jr-penned Atlanta-set hip-hop comedy project Rollin' Thunder, which centers on a former bowling champion turned ex-con, who sees a chance to get back in the game via a bowling tournament, as well as prove his innocence to the tycoon who owns Atlanta's biggest bowling alley, and mend bridges with his estranged teenaged daughter.

Last fall, IFC Films acquired stateside rights to this Samuel L. Jackson starrer - the David Weaver-directed neo noir thriller titled The Samaritan, which co-stars Ethiopian-Irish actress Ruth Negga and Brit Tom Wilkinson.

Lately, she has been working on a documentary about the basketball player Dennis Rodman, some of which she has been shooting via Skype. That came up because a) Ms. Marshall is a big sports fan. ("You can yell and scream at a game and no one's taking you away in a white coat.") And b) "I have a little radar to the insane," she said. "They seek me out. Dennis and his agent asked if I would do a documentary."

When I read about radical movements like these, one of the first things I think about is how much involvement there is from people of color, especially black people, since that's the group we're most interested in here. I watch the trailer below for this upcoming new documentary, and it's completely devoid of any non-white faces, even though its subject matter is one that I think speaks to a familiar history of struggle against authority and revolution, in a fight for rights.
