Last we wrote about this project from BET and husband/wife team, Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, Gabrielle Union had been cast as the lead in the new drama series called Single Black Female.
BET has given a pilot order to what will be an hour-long series from the Akils, which will follow the professional and private family life of a black woman, who is also the host of a popular Atlanta-based talk show host.
Announced earlier today, joining Union in the series will be Aaron D. Spears (The Bold & The Beautiful) and Richard Roundtree, who will both co-star opposite Gabrielle.
It's now known that the character Union plays will be named Mary Jane (curious if that was an arbitrary choice of names, or if there's some meaning behind it; I immediately think of Rick James' song of the same name, and his isn't the only one).
Aaron Spears will play Mark Bradley, described as "a charismatic co-anchor and close friend to Mary Jane;" Richard Roundtree will play Mary Jane’s father.
I haven't seen a single frame of this yet, but if I were the Akils, I'd plan to eventually change the title of this.
