No joke, and with Wayne Brady of all people, the corniest man on the planet. But first, a bit of background.

If you're of my generation then you remember what a huge hit the TV game show Let's Make A Deal was back in the day. It was first on NBC during most of the 1960's, then later moved over to ABC until the mid 1970's and during all that time was hosted by Monte Hall who was also the creator of the show (and no doubt a very very rich man today).

The show was so popular that it spun off a syndicated nighttime version which ran from the late 70's well into the 80's.

There were attempts to revive the show in the early 1990's and then again in 2003 with different hosts. But in 2009 CBS brought back the show, as part of the network's daytime programming, with Brady as host.

Now you would think, as I did,  that the era of TV game shows was long past, but evidently that is far from the case.

Turns out the this new Brady version of Deal has been a smash hit for CBS, and just last week, the show got the biggest audience ever for the network, pulling in nearly 3 million viewers, reaching an all time high with women viewers in the coveted 25-54 year old demographic.

Just goes to show you that corniness does pay off.

    Loved him on "Chappelle's Show"!

We tell the media to stop portraying us like we all think and act alike. But the minute someone acts differently than some are use to the insults start. Sorry Sergio that Brady does not fit the stereotype you expected.

You're absoluetly right of course. If Brady could be more like Chief Keef then I wouldn't have any problems with him

  • getthesenets | February 2, 2013 12:20 AMReply

I don't think Wayne Brady is particularly talented. Incredibly driven, yes
There's an old old Foxxhole Radio interview of Wayne (on Sirius) that is HILARIOUS!!!

Wayne Brady IS corny. And you know what? Wayne Brady GETS IT! He knows he's corny. But corniness is only one-side of his persona. Yes, to be the host of "Let's Make a Deal", you have to have a level of Corniness to interact with a woman or man wearing a chicken on their head. He's an actor, singer, dancer, impressionist. He's done theater, musical theater, dinner shows, live stage shows at Disneyland and more. Wayne Brady ain't no joke. This man is working; always working. When he became host of "Let's Make a Deal" it was with Monty Hall's approval/blessing.
Aisha Tyler has a podcast called "Girl on Guy". On 1 May 2012, she did an interview with Wayne Brady. It was fascinating. You can find it on iTunes. Check it out if you can. I'm not in his pocket and I'm not in his fan club, but I respect Wayne Brady.

P.S. As, another commenter said, for comparing him to Rick Ross, yes, you have to give Brady credit for not going around shirtless all the time. Please NO ONE wants to see that. Can someone tell Ross to stop doing that. It's disgusting. Makes you want to throw up

  • Sergio | February 2, 2013 8:29 AM

I've heard that interview you refer to a couple of months ago and you're right. It is quite fascinating. I wish he would show more of those layers that he revealed in that talk with Tyler. But like I said he clearly is modeling himself after Sammy Davis Jr which is not a bad role model to follow. There aren't really all around talents anymore like Davis But there's some element that agreesively desperate and pandering with the way Brady does it which equals Corniness with a capital C.

ITS NOT THAT SERIOUS! Hello! I'm with Carl and Sergio on this one. In the eyes of many, Wayne Brady IS corny... so what? His defenders are the one who needs to deal with it.

It would be a different argument if a few superlatives were thrown in. You know, like, Wayne Brady was the corniest negro that ever graced this earth. Or, Wayne Brady is so corny that he makes Samuel Jackson's Django character look like a choir boy.

I know, I know, if someone said that, they'd be implying that Wayne is so corny he looks like a white guy who's trying to act black. But that's NOT what Sergio said nor implied.

Look, adjectives are used every day to discribe people, regardless of their color, so again, what's the big damn deal? I know what it is. Some folks are just as corny as Mr. Brady and now they feel offended and compelled to stand-up with a raised black fist and yell "Cream rises to the top, corny or not, we're black and we're proud. I get that. But check this.

We all know Tyler Perry has been called a host of unpleasant names, but that hasn't stopped him. The same goes for our current president, but again, so what? Hell, check the books, Sergio gets called names on the regular, but I've yet to see him cry like somebody pulled his black card. Geez, truth be told, I believe a few readers just have a thang against Sergio's open and honest spirit. DEAL WITH IT... and as Carl said, take your panties out of your butt.

  • DGB360 | February 1, 2013 3:32 PMReply

There's always somebody to take you down a notch. Sergio is no different. Folks are not programed to give smart black men their props. But that didn't hold back this "so called corny black men". Brady has worked long and hard to be at this level. Some folks can't handle a black president. Cream rises to the top, corny of not. Deal with it.

  • Carl | February 1, 2013 1:59 PMReply

Sergio you should have known that comment would offend the corny Wayne Brady apologists in the world. You guys need to pull the panties out your ass. Its not that serious. Are you on the man's payroll or something? lol

  • Micah | February 1, 2013 1:54 PMReply

So because he's a nice guy, he's corny? I'm with Tasha and Filmguy on this. We could use a few more guys like Wayne Brady.

  • Monique a Williams | February 1, 2013 11:40 PM

Wayne Brady isn't as corny as Rick Ross. #ijs

  • Tasha | February 1, 2013 1:43 PMReply

Chappelle put this to rest, eons ago at that. Corny is trying to revive this pigeon holing of Brady. If you dont like corny Sergio try to set the example.

  • Filmguy | February 1, 2013 10:22 AMReply

When a man makes himself successful without using slang, rapping or running a ball, he's corny. But what's the alternative? Keeping it hood and broke? If anything he is businessman who should be studied and imitated.

  • urbanauteur | February 1, 2013 1:00 PM

Be Kool & the Gang with that,Sergio, b/c you might get hit with a burlap sack, filled crystal balls;-)

  • CC | February 1, 2013 10:56 AM

Excuse me, did you just say the opposite of corny is not using slang, rapping or running a ball? I don't think so. Wayne Brady is corny by definition. Look it up and you might learn something.

  • sergio | February 1, 2013 10:40 AM

I knew someone would get upset about what i said about Brady. But it's true. O.K. I get it. He wants to be an all around entertainer in the mold of Sammy Davis Jr. Singer, dancer, comedian, impressionist, game show host, etc. That's great. There aren't really entertainers like that any more. Beyonce maybe wants to be, but she can't act, she can't tell jokes, she can't design clothes, she can't wear her own hair. Hell she can't even talk. But unlike Davis there's an essential corniness to Brady. Maybe because he just tries REALLY hard to be likable and it comes off as being forced and desperate. He just needs to hold it back a bit
