Well, it's not for the adaptation of The Book Of Negroes, which I think is the one upcoming Clement virgo project that most of us would rather see first, instead of a remake of The Harder They Come, but this could assist in some way in getting that other project financed.

Well, it's not for the adaptation of The Book Of Negroes, which I think is the one upcoming Clement virgo project that most of us would rather see first, instead of a remake of The Harder They Come, but this could assist in some way in getting that other project financed.

Astral's Harold Greenberg $1.3 million English-Language Program Fund announced its latest round of funding for 29 new and/or ongoing projects, and Clement Virgo's modern-day remake of The Harder They Come is one of the lucky 29, chosen from 133 applications.

First announced earlier this year, U.K. production company Xingu Films (Trudie Styler's company - she's Sting's wife), Canada's Conquering Lion (Jamaican-born Canadian Clement Virgo's company), and Jamaican producer Justine Henzell are uniting to remake the 1972 Jamaican crime drama classic, which starred reggae legend Jimmy Cliff as an aspiring musician lured into a life of crime.

It's worth noting that the original film was written and directed by producer Justine Henzell's father, Perry Henzell, who died in 2006.

They are describing the remake as "a re-imagining that will move to contemporary reggae and reggae-influenced grooves."

A  draft of the screenplay was at the time expected to complete in time for the 2011 Cannes market, where the production team likely began shopping the project around for financing and distribution, with principal photography scheduled to begin sometime this year, 2012 (the 40th anniversary of the original film), assuming all else (funding and cast) comes together.

And speaking of cast... no word on what actors are being considered in this contemporary version of the film.

Justine Henzell, who owns the rights to his father's original work, claims to have been approached "many times by companies with remake ideas," adding, "For the first time, I am confident we have a team that will simultaneously honor the original while creating a new narrative worthy of the legacy."

And let's not forget its iconic soundtrack!

No word on just how much money has been raised thus far, and how much more they still have to come up with. But it looks like they're certainly on their way, collecting chunks here and there as they go.
